Have you seen the Venice Syndrome?  (16 Answers)

I saw this documentary film two nights ago and it left me sad... and much more, can't describe I hurt I feel. It's directed by Andreas Pichler (details on IMDb.)

The film depicts the rapid disappearance of Venice as a real city. Seeing what is happening to La Serenissima and to its long-time residents is depressing. It's like the rape of a culture... I doubt I'll ever join the throngs of invaders there now.
(I did visit once, in 2004, September I think... we found a quiet piazzetta by La Fenice, ate alfresco, a real dream! The change was not drastic yet, although one could sense it coming.)

See the trailer for the film:

http://vimeo.com/52491214

I'm hanging on to a ray of hope, of going in January or February, where I might see a Venice without monster cruise ships defiling the lagoon. I want to go back to Burano, well mostly to Mazzorbo across the bridge... at least to realise a dream I have before I leave Venice to the Huns... forever.

Bravo to Andreas Pichler for bringing great protagonists to the screen, real Venetians who opened their houses and hearts to us in the film. *That* I will never forget.
Ciao Venèsia!

Does anyone share the same thoughts?  (9 Answers)

One of the reasons I hope and am praying on top of trying to be a good person is to 'have a place in heaven' is to see&play with all my pets (and other animals whom I have had the good fortune of having them for company) who have gone before me. I like people but animals take the cake. They've tought me alot about unconditional love and selflessness. Also the responsibility for caring for others. I think i would spend most of my time having fun with all the animals instead of playing the harp, singing and reading. lol. What do they do there in heaven? I wonder if they have like a special section for animals so they are free to roam, free from cruelty and other pains. I would go there every day!
Anyone finds this an additional good reason to earn more brownie points to end up in heaven?

Good Thursday thoughts.

E-ticket middle name mystery  (3 Answers)

I have bought two round trip tickets from Hong Kong to Manchester for me and my wife with Qatar Airways. On the e-ticket there isn't enough space for my full name as the tickets were bought through an agency in China where the names are somewhat shorter.
I went onto QRs website to check and under 'Passengers', both our names were correct. However, under 'Advanced Passenger Information' there was an 'H' for both of our middle names.
Can anyone explain this and will it affect our checking in?

Multiple airlines - checked baggage, date changes and such  (22 Answers)

Overwhelmed with options, searching through Skscanner and Kayak, some of the best deals are with multiple airlines and should be purchased through their affiliate sites - Orbitz, Expedia and such.

I can't figure is there a way to learn in advance, before booking, whether the baggage gets checked all the way through, or has to be retrieved and checked again between certain airlines? Especially if that has to be done during a short layover which involves going through the immigration (upon entering Canada and catching another local flight). These search/booking engines don't 'think' about such details, don't they, eh?

And FYI I've tried with two travel agents and they were just plain ignorant ... gave me a 45 min layover upon entering the country, had no idea about the baggage issue, gave me total FLIGHT time instead of total travel time....

Also, I'd appreciate if anyone knows what happens if one wants to change the dates of their return flight - is there a separate charge fee for each leg (3) ?

Thank you very much!

Rieker shoes from Germany  (28 Answers)

I recently bought a pair of this brand of shoe here in Australia, they are made in Germany, they are very comfortable and as I have a wide foot wondered if anyone knew if this brand is a wide make - I am keen to get some fur lined boots and have seen some Rieker boots that I like on a German website. In the shoe it just says size 42, no width is mentioned. Shops here don,t tend to stock fur lined boots but I am keen to get some as I suffer with cold feet. Do you think it is reasonably safe to go ahead and order them considering I won,t be able to try them on?

Life philosophy in one sentence  (52 Answers)

A Hawaiian radio station I listen to, KINE, asked its FB list, "What is your life philosophy, in one sentence?"
A lot of folks quoted the Golden Rule; others stressed, "Family first." My favorite response was from a guy who said, "Two scoops rice."

What's yours? Mine seems to change daily. Two days ago it was "Measure twice, cut once." Yesterday it was "Be kind, even to nasty people who would benefit from a good smack upside the head." Not sure yet what today's is.

Is "V" for victory really offensive in the UK???  (51 Answers)

As you guys probably know, the Christian Science Monitor has a lot of quizzes on which they test you on all sorts of obscure things. One such quiz is "Are you a savvy global traveler", aimed specifically at an American audience. See csmonitor.com/World/Global-I...

OK, many of the answers I just guessed at, and I can attribute my high score only to the fact that I know how to take multiple-choice tests.

However, the second question really puzzled me...see inside...

What is the longest it has ever taken for your postcards to reach people?  (16 Answers)

I was thinking about sending NO MORE POSTCARDS because none of the cards I had mailed on Jan 8th in New Zealand, at a post office, got to their destination. In fact some cards never seem to make it to their destination. Sally (VTer Beausoleil) was one of the people I sent a card to and knew I was disappointed. Well her card finally arrived! The one I sent my husband finally arrived! The ones I sent to work and friends finally arrived! All on April 11th and 12th. Three months seems pretty long for something mailed from a post office where they gave me Par Avion stickers along with my stamps. In comparison it only took two weeks for a postcard that was mailed at Post Office Bay in the Galapagos to get to me - those who know about this know that mail that is dropped off is picked up by other travelers and then hand delivered - a real local custom. What is the longest it has taken for your postcards to get to their destination? Do you still send them?

Vintage silk cleaning  (6 Answers)

Hi All
I've been given my fiance's grandma's silk wedding dress and I'd like to wear it for mine, BUT it's got a lot of brown staining on it. Has anyone had any experience of cleaning vintage silk themselves?
I've looked on-line and people are recomending American products or just say 'mild detergent', not to use a clorine bleach, and I'm a bit scared to just go ahead so am looking for personal tips.
A bit more info on the dress; it was made in 1942 by the bride's sister is a heavy ivory silk damask (sprigs of flowers). The staining seems to be more on the flowers but is also down the sides on both the plain and patterned silk.
Or maybe I should just try to find a specialist dry-cleaners?!

Skyscanner and time for connecting flights  (23 Answers)

Trying to book flights with Skyscanner, I'm being offered options with as little as 40 minutes to catch a connecting flight at busy airports like Frankfurt. This doesn't seem possible to me and in the eventuality of flight 1 being delayed, potentially disastrous.

What are your experiences with short times between connecting flights ?

Hotmail Inbox Gone, Vanished  (17 Answers)

This afternoon when I checked my Hotmail Inbox, I noticed that all my emails except for those of the last few days have been deleted. That means emails from the last 14 years that I purposely did not delete are gone and, from what I have read on the internet, they are gone forever.

Has anyone had this happen to them and if so what did you do about it.

Visa advice please, UK citizen to USA working for bed and board.  (9 Answers)

As I'm taking a bit of a career break at the moment I'm thinking about trying to arrange a 3-6 month trip to America early next year to do unpaid, unskilled work in exchange for bed and board. I've checked sites such as Workaway to find a host but unfortunately they don't advise re visa requirements. As I'm in my 40's I'm a bit too old for the many student sponsorship schemes I've found. I hold a UK passport. Despite contacting the American consulate and trawling the net for advice on which type of visa I would need to apply for I can't get my head around it. So I wondered if there was anyone out there who's done this type of trip and could advise me accordingly. I know I have to have a named host to go to but don't know what to do next. I've heard it might be easier to go to Canada and do a similar thing but I thought I'd try America first. Thanks.

Funeral Etiquette  (13 Answers)

Recently I attended my aunt's funeral, she died at the age of 97. Her husband of over 70 years lives on and attended the funeral. My cousin gave a wonderfully enlightened eulogy with much humour and love. It was so inspiring that, I think 80% of the audience, ok mourners, wanted to clap. Of course we are all saddened by her passing, however, I see no reason why a funeral service needs to be a sombre affair, after all we are there to say our last farewells and leave with fond memories.
Recently a local member of our community had requested the song "Wish Me Luck As You Wave Me Goodbye" for his farewell music. Now that, I think, is the right attitude as it made all present leave the funeral service with such a warm feeling for the deceased.

Why is it that we cannot applaud when the job was so well handled?

Bookng.com is freaking me out!  (20 Answers)

So, I'm on this site and notice a room for87. It's telling me 2 other people are looking at the same room online and the last booking at this place happened 45 seconds ago. I click "Refresh" and the price goes to170. I pause, click "Refresh" again and the price is back87. I go to the hotel details and the web site tells me, "Hurry! Last chance! Only 1 left!" I click "Refresh", the price is back to170. Now three people are looking at the room. I click the "Refresh" button and it shows me the87. ...Last booking was 15 seconds ago--still 3 people looking at the room.

Now this is for a place called Stone House Hotel, in the (very) small town of Hawes, England for late November. Certainly *not* the height of tourist season there.

I know for a fact that NOBODY else is looking at this room at this very moment. They seriously expect me to believe there is? That it's a high-demand rush, rush?! That room will be there next week. What sort of scam is this web site pulling? How are they allowed to get away with it? Absolutely no truth in this sort of selling. I really can't stand when travel booking sites do this sort of thing--it totally undermines their credibility and eliminates any good thoughts I might have had through previous experience.

Any of you been through these bait-and-switch or buy-now-or-get-left-out things? Even Amazon has started telling me they "Only 2 left in stock!" for certain DVDs. Seriously, Amazon?! I've seen photos of your warehouses. ...I know you have more than 2.

Local Uproar over VT ranking - Penang vs Singapore  (20 Answers)

LOL, today, I read the local newspaper in glee that VT has ranked Singapore (2nd) over Penang (3rd) as top choice of street food. Bangkok was ranked first.

thestar.com.my/news/story.as...

As a Penangite, I would say that I have enjoyed eating street food in my travels in Bangkok and Singapore. Of course, I will vote for Penang.

What is culinary experience if you have eaten in Bangkok, Singapore and Penang. I think all 3 places deserve high marks.

where does the Angkor Wat money go?  (4 Answers)

It is reported on TTR weekly that the Aspara National Authority who have the rights to all the temples at Angkor Wat are now conducting a survey with the possibility of increasing entrance fees, which are presently20 for a day,40 for 3 days,60 for a week. I think most tourists would not mind too much but how much of the fee goes to the Aspara Authority and how much trickles back in to the local economy. Anybody knows the figures?

The most perfect Eurovision song that never was???  (8 Answers)

For us, one of the pleasures of getting to Europe is to scour the stores for bargain basement CDs that remind us of when we were young, and last week when we were in Germany, we pixked up a copy of Nena's greatest hits (well, to be more accurate in the context of the English speaking world, all one of them, but let's not be pedantic).
It struck me that "99 Balloons" ("99 Luftballons") was the most perfect Eurovision song that never was ... sung by a beautiful (but not threatening sexy) singer, apolitical theme, catchy riff and enhanced by the stunt of letting the balloons fly free at the climax ...
Any other nominations that would have garnered your 'douze points'???
