Skiing at Snowshoe

I couldn't find anything about Snowshoe here on VT, so I was wondering if anyone could share their experience. We usually go skiing in NC, but it's been so warm this winter we were thinking about heading up to WV. How is the skiing here and any recommendations about where to stay? Also, if anyone lives in the area, has there been any snow? We plan to go the last weekend in January.

Thanks,

Justin

Tour group  (4 Answers)

Will be bringing a motorcoach tour of seniors to WV in June. Looking for info on things to do for this type of group. Maybe scenic drives in the Charleston area. Specifically can a drive to the New Gorge Bridge be made by motorcoach? Any other suggestions on possible scenic drives or other things to see or do will be appreciated

U.S. 52  (5 Answers)

Can anyone tell me what driving from Bluefield to Huntington on 52 is like? I'm sick of the Turnpike and big rigs up my tailpipe. Is it all or mostly 4 lane? I would rather take a good back road any day and actually enjoy the drive. Freeway driving is russian roulette. Thanks!

West Virginia in late March/early April  (5 Answers)

Mr. travelmad478 and I are going to be heading through WV (going from NJ to just south of Lexington, Kentucky) during Easter week, March 30-April 3. We have a total of three nights to spend there, and I'm wondering where we might go. I would love to hike or do other outdoorsy things, but I'm a little concerned that it will be cold and rainy.

The northern end of Monongahela National Forest (around Canaan) is kind of leaping out at me as a cool place. Does anyone have any other suggestions? I've only driven through West Virginia, but never stopped there except to visit Harper's Ferry.

Travel to Morgantown from Pinehurst, NC  (2 Answers)

I need to travel to Morgantown and I am having difficulty finding a flight that doesn't have multiple layovers. I have also tried to travel by train. Does anyone know of the most direct way to MGW from Pinehurst? I now believe by car might be the quickest way. Any help is appreciated.

Looking for a cabin the the New River Gorge area or nearby lake, any suggestions?  (1 Answer)

Looking for a cabin in the New River Gorge area with 2-3 bedrooms and hopefully next to the water. This will be a family vacation with the intention of seeing the sites and doing some fishing. I would like to be on a lake to river to fish, must have a hot tub too.

Anyone have suggestions of places that they stayed or know of? We have looked at a lot of the brochures but you really don't know what you're getting unless you've seen it.

Waterfalls  (1 Answer)

I am looking for some unique waterfalls to photograph in West Virginia. I have a few that I have taken pictures of here

However I am looking for the highest waterfall in West Virginia.

The waterfall that I have a picture of on is the second highest waterfall in West Virginia but I am looking for the highest waterfall.

Also I am looking for remote waterfalls that are inaccessible by car. we like to hike out to areas that are practically untouched.

Any idea or comments are appreciated.

Driving from Kentucky to West Virginia  (3 Answers)

Hello!!

In September, my family and I are going to be going to Memphis, and then thought we could drive on to West Virginia to visit my relatives (they live near Logan, WV). My question is this: although this isn't specifically about WV, could anyone recommend any side trips between Louisville, KY and Charleston? Thanks so much!!!

Visiting in Winter

I'm pondering a trip to West Virginia around Christmas this year, and I wonder if anyone could give me any suggestions where to go. I'm driving from Fredericksburg (VA), so I'll probably visit somewhere in eastern WV. I'm not too interested in skiing though, or Christmas festivals or anything. Does anyone have a suggestion for where I could go?

Traveling south to Florida - choose between east or west routes  (2 Answers)

Hello, I hope I'm writing to the correct forum (or maybe should try W. Virginia)?

Every other year since I was in university, I travel south to Florida from Ontario for Christmas. Most recently we've been traveling further West, through Ohio /Kentucky. This time we are considering the Easterly route through New York / Penn / through Beckley (thats the tunnel right? or is that Bluefield?) Wytheville, etc. (Hwy 77/74)

Lets say we chose the westerly route and were in Lexington, Kentucky the evening before? Are the highways passable from Lexington, KY to Beckley / Wytheville / Mt. Airy? Can anyone recommend a route? Sould we include a section of the Blue Ridge Parkway? I can see some highways on a map, just am concerned if there are gas stations open at night, or any other dangers? Also a recommendation for a good restaurant serving mmm buckwheat pancakes ;)? or anything else traditional?

Thanks for your advice - we're getting too 'arthritic' to sit in a car drinking Gatorade for 24 hours like we used to ;)

Potomac Highlands  (5 Answers)

We plan to drive through the Potomac Highlands in West Virginia during the first week of August next year. I'll be travelling with two teenagers. Although I'm originally from America, I've never been to West Virginia. My children have been raised in Britain. The kids love America and like things that are quintessentially American. (probably so they can impress their friends back in the UK) I love the scenery but I'm also looking for activies for the kids. Any suggestions? We would also love to see some live music on the way. Can anyone recommend a good place to stop? Any recommended routes or places to avoid? Thanks for your help.

Family Lodge/cabin facilities  (8 Answers)

My family has a re-union every year and next year my brother and I were charged with finding and arranging a place in West Virginia for said re-union. What we are looking for is a place that rents lodges/cabins with enough capacity for 40-50 people including singles, teens and families. We would prefer someplace kind of secluded (relatively speaking) that is fairly easy to get to by car. Someone had recommended a state park (Pipestem was the name if I recall properly) as a good location. As I am not familiar with WV, any input on areas would be wonderful! Thanks in advance, Chris

fall color  (3 Answers)

My hubby was born and raised in Bluefield, but left as a youth. his sister still lives there. I love Southern WV and would move there in a heartbeat if could sell out here in Florida. For now we will vacation there this fall near new River Gorge, so would like to know when the leaves are full color and when first snowfall is likely. Niot to ski, but just to look at. Thanks you lucky dudes that live there.

I love ATV or motorcycle trail riding but have to rent one now. I saw that Ace Adventures resort near Fayetteville has guided ATV trail rides. Also some other resorts around there rent ATV's. Anyone done this in WV, and any tips on it?
