West Virginia

U.S. 52

Can anyone tell me what driving from Bluefield to Huntington on 52 is like? I'm sick of the Turnpike and big rigs up my tailpipe. Is it all or mostly 4 lane? I would rather take a good back road any day and actually enjoy the drive. Freeway driving is russian roulette. Thanks!

No, it will be mostly (but not all)one lane in each direction with lots of turns going up and down mountains. The worst part is that you have to pass through many little towns and will not not make good time. But you will get a good feel for local atmosphere.

To Texas Dave, Thanks for the reply Dave, when did you last travel it? WVTourism told me it was all 4lane now. Were they fibbing?

Well I haven't been there in a while and I have never driven the whole length of it but i can assure you that Hwy 52 is not all 4 lane from Bluefield to Huntington. There are a lot of little towns you have to pass through and you won't make good time taking that route.

i confirmed from my cousin who lives in northeastern VA. she advised many sections are under construction. they are widening it to 4 lane (2 lanes each way) highway.

avoid it.

I love the WV Turnpike! I always figured that it was scary as hell in a four-wheeler though. Most through trucks do avoid US-52 but there are no restrictions on that road so you will have some truck traffic, mostly log and coal trucks.
