My family has a re-union every year and next year my brother and I were charged with finding and arranging a place in West Virginia for said re-union. What we are looking for is a place that rents lodges/cabins with enough capacity for 40-50 people including singles, teens and families. We would prefer someplace kind of secluded (relatively speaking) that is fairly easy to get to by car. Someone had recommended a state park (Pipestem was the name if I recall properly) as a good location. As I am not familiar with WV, any input on areas would be wonderful! Thanks in advance, Chris
I went to college about six miles from Pipestem. There are nice cabins and a hotel there. You can play golf and ride horses there. They have a nice pool and a couple of place to eat. It is easy to get to and is only about fifteen miles from an interstate. I lived in Princeton which is near the interstate. It usually cool down at night and the days rarely get more than 85.
Thanks for the info. :-) It is much appreciated. I am finding some more information about the New River gorge area too.
This sounds like such a fun thing! Good luck with it. I've heard good things about the various state park lodges -- you'll find info about them here: http://www.wvstateparks.com/
Thanks! I don't think I've explored that link yet. I shall have to check it out. :)
There is a tram that runs down to the Bluestone River from the park. It is fun if you have never go on one before. You can also take a mountain bike ride down the mountain to the bottom and walk across the river and return on the tram. The actual New River Gorge is more than an hour away near Beckley. The area is booked well in advance because white water rafting is so popular. The closer to the town of Fayetteville you get during the season the harder it is to find a place to stay. Beckley does have lots of motels but do not count on getting a room without a reservation. Beckley does have a actual Coal Mine that you can tour in the city park. The coal train enters at the base of a hill and goes through the hill. It does not go down only horizontal. A great view of the New River Gorge is found at Grand View State Park. You can also see an outdoor play there in the summer. They have the Hatfield and Mc Coys feud play there a couple of time a week. The view of the gorge is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen and I have traveled all over.
Try visiting NewRiverWV.com, which is the primary guide to the Pipestem area!
Black Water Falls State Park has a beautiful lodge. I've stayed there and also at Pipestem and prefer Black Water Falls. The walk to the falls is very easily accessed. There is also a stable for horseback riding, a nature museum, a small lake with paddle boats and other things to do. The lodge has a large commons area where your family can get together to watch tv, play board games etc. There is also a shuffle board outside that room overlooking the river and a small game room with a few older video games and a ping pong table.
There is also a very nice conference center in Ripley, WV called Cedar Lakes. It is a nice secluded area with 2 lakes for fishing. But it is also only about 5 minutes from Ripley which has a Wal-Mart, Kroger, a nice variety of fast food restaurants and several nicer dinner restaurants. The lodge was built just a few years ago. There is also a cafeteria which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner every day if you would have need of that. Here's their website: http://www.cedarlakes.com/
You Got some good replies.I like Blackwater Falls as well.Have you looked into Cannaan Valley State Park? They have a big main lodge with cabins and hotel rooms. It's right near the ski-area and in the summer there is a golf course.
