What is the most scenic route from Manhattan to West Point?

This could be a matter of opinion. The best route is probably to take the George Washington Bridge to the Palisade Interstate Parkway to the end then onto to 9W north. This is scenic, faster and there is no toll to cross the Hudson River leaving NYC.

However, do not return this way! The George Washington Bridge toll is now $12 going back to NYC. The most scenic and cheapest return is to actually cross Bear Mountain Bridge. Instead of going back on the P.I.P., turn left and cross the bridge. It's only $1.00! Over the bridge turn right on Route 6/ 202 for a few mile then onto route 9 south. This will take you back to NYC.

It sounds more difficult than it is but the signage is fairly good.

Here is a link to the Hudson Valley website which also might help.

I was able to drive around the area between NYC and the Hudson Valley on the other side of West Point a few years ago and enjoyed the views from across the river. If you get up that way be sure to stop in the town of Cold Spring, NY.

certainly agree with the route north to west point by GWB and Palisades. At the north end of the Palisades, look for signs and get on 6E for about two miles to the traffic circle. Go 3/4 ways around and north on 9W. Just north of west point is the Storm King Highway overlooking the Hudson which brings you to Cornwall on Hudson, consider Painter"s Pub for lunch. Then 9W back to the Bear Mountain Bridge.

returning you can cross the bear mountain bridge, then 202 to 9 South as desribed or, for better time, stay on 202 all the way to the Taconic State Parkway south. For west side manhattan swing onto the Saw Mill River Parkway south. For east side Manhattan go straight, becomes the Sprain Brook Parkway, then the Bronx River Parkway about ten miles later - all the same road. At the end of the Bronx River, take the Bruckner Expressway to the Triboro (RFK) Bridge to acces the FDR Drive and the east side. 9 south becomes very slow passing thru towns like tarrytown, yonkers, dobbs ferry - a city street really.
