On tour. Staying at Best Western. Have a few hours on our own. Is ferry within walking distance? If not, what rate per mile can I expect to pay cab transportation? Thanks.
Firstly, Valdez has no public transport, car and bike rental are available. The ferry terminal is about 1kilometer (600mile) from Best Western

This is our first trip to Alaska and we are taking a group tour. Valdez is first overnight stop but arriving early pm. We only have approx 4-5 hours on our own. Thought perhaps fishing or kayaking. I envisioned the ferry to be closer to the harbor. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for the info thus far.
I think you don't have to worry about getting a cab, if you staying at Best Western they have complimentary shuttle [original link]
Walkable depending on what you are carrying. It's about 1/2 mile.

I just called the hotel & say there are taxis in the community and the local U-Haul rents cars.
If you are coming in on the Alaska state car ferries, then it's only a few blocks. I think the hotel has a shuttle van if you call them. If however you are coming in on a cruise ship, then I believe they ferry you in small boats right to the hotel, which sits right on the water near the city docks.
