I will be traveling to Chile in July by way of Uruguay and Argentina. My plan is to fly in to Montevideo and then bus to Chile while taking my time to see some things. When flying in to Montevideo is there a fee? I was going to be flying in to Buenos Aires but I found out there's a140 fee at the airport so I will be disembarking at Montevideo instead if there is no fee. Just to clarify, is there a fee to enter Uruguay at the airport in Montevideo? Also, I will be leaving by bus, is there anything I should be aware of like fees to leave by bus and enter Argentina by bus?

My husband and I may be traveling from the USA to Uruguay for Christmas, New Years, and a birthday for approximately 2 weeks. We would like some beach time and prefer quiet towns or remote locations, or villages without much glitz and budget lodging. Considering Punta del Diablo, Cabo Polonio, Jose Ignacio?? Will there be cabins or rooms available if we just stop in, or will they be booked with holiday travelers? I understand this is high season. What is Christmas like in Uruguay - limited services / restaurants? Also may head west for different experience. Suggestions on timing and locations greatly appreciated? Thanks!

I'm planning on travelling from September for a year or so and was hoping to begin my trip in Rio de Janeiro. I'm planning on starting my travelling with a trip from Rio to Buenos Aires with a budget tour company, just to ease myself into travelling, as I'll be travelling solo.
I've found 2 trips that look good:
1) GAP Adventures - In Search of Iguassu
2) Intrepid - Rio to Buenos Aires Unplugged
A few questions:
1) Which of those 2 would you recommend?
2) What other budget tour companies are there that do a similar trip?
I'm faced with a bit of a problem. I finish my finals exams on the 2nd September so dont want to start my travels immediately after that as I'll need time to pack, say my goodbyes etc. So ideally I'd like to leave mid september. However the dates of these tours are not ideal for me at all.
For GAP the tour dates available are 8th September and 28th September (as the 15th September, which would be ideal for me is booked out already!), and Intrepid tour dates are 11th September and 25th September. So I'm wondering is there any other tour companies I could use as a tour that starts around 15-18th September would be the best for me.
The thing that has put me off Intrepid a bit is that you could end up being the only one on the tour, and that would be pretty awful to be honest.
I want to go on a tour that is mainly younger people if possible.
I will travel one month this summer as I do it to 2-5 different countries every year. Uruguay is inside my plans.
Could you please write me some sample costs in Uruguay in Euros or Dolars please? In Montevideo and other towns.
A cheap meal in a cafe
A good meal in a restaurant but not luxury one
A local beer in a bar
A local spirit in a bar or club
A cheap but clean single room in a guesthouse or pension
A small, central apt to rent
Enterance to a museum
A botle of water in market
A bus drive for 5 or 6 hours
Thanks a lot :)
We are a couple from the UK with two young children, and for some time now we have dreamt of visiting Uruguay. We are now in a position to visit Montevideo for 3 months from end of March 2010, and so are looking into accommodation options. We would like to stay in Pocitos or another family-friendly area. As we have two small children (they will be 6 months and 3yrs old respectively when we come) we really need an apartment with a kitchen in which we can prepare and eat food. We would also need a minimum of 2 bedrooms, but the second bedroom can be small. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice which could help us/point us in the right direction in trying to find a decent apartment in a nice/family friendly area. We obviously don't have much time (4 weeks to go) to get this sorted so any help you can give would really be appreciated. Also, any advice/experience of places to avoid, or the usual protocols to follow for deposits etc. for this type of short-term rental would be much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
Chloe (& Dotun)
We are staying in Montevideo in March and hope to spend a day in Minas on a saturday. we will be using public transport (bus),we should be there 5 /6 hours, are there any decent walks around Minas or any special sites to see.
We will visit Montevideo in February for a week and would like to see the sea lions in Isla de Lobos. Any advice how we could arrange the trip to Isla de Lobos from Montevideo?
Thanks a lot already in advance!
I am trying to wend my way back from Montevideo into Argentina from Uruguay either crossing over from Fray Bentos or Paysandu, but I don't have recent information on whether the bridges are open and letting buses cross. Is their a website of bus schedules/companies so to plan the journey from Montevideo?
I am arriving in BA on 16th November and the plan is to travel straight to Uruguay for a few days. While there I was hoping to watch the Uruguay Vs Costa Rica World Cup Qualifying Match.
What are the chances of getting tickets? I know it's a really important game and many Uruguayans will want to be there but its a big stadium (73,000) so I thought I may have a chance.
If tickets are available how would I go about getting them? Can you buy them outside of Uruguay or indeed away from the stadium itself? I may well be in Montevideo the night before the game so could buy tickets then.
Any advice would be appreciated.
Hello, can anybody recommend and hotel or Cabinas in La Paloma (or Rocha)?
