Is Van province considered safe for travel? I'm considering going there with just myself (male) and adult daughter. Is renting a car and traveling around that area on our own without a guide a reasonable thing to do? Thanks so much for any relevant information.
The Kurdish area of Turkey is often branded as "unsafe". This is perhaps undeservedly so. Yes, the PKK attack various location in the area, but these are often targeted at police and military institutions. Whereas attacks in Istanbul or Ankara are more random in nature.
I'm not saying Van is completely safe, the sad fact is nowhere is completely safe. But we can't plan our lives around the remote possibility of random acts of violence. Go. Enjoy. Van is cool.
If you were asking a question about South East part of the country, I was going to say not to go there.. but Van is ok. But a rental car over there can be a problem on the other hand... There are some local companies that you can use, however you might have some problems while communicating in English or any other language..
Center is safe now. But I am not sure about around... Everything is changing this year. Renting car can be difficult way too... And now Van is -30 degree!
I advice to take tour. This company is from Ankara. I am sure you may find many other tours.
Have a good trip.
I bused and hitch hiked Southern and Eastern Turkey and the Van area. Even though I didn't speak english for 25 days, I didn't have a problem.
