Bac Ha a good alternative to Sa Pa?  (3 Answers)

We'd like to head up in the direction of Sa Pa (during the week) in September. I've heard that Bac Ha is a less touristy alternative. Does anyone have any opinion on this? Is it also good for walking, cycling, picturesque? Or is Sa Pa not actually that bad during the week and more scenic?

Sapa, Lao Cai, Lai Chau area; any advice?

i am planning a trip in November 05 to Sapa, Lao Cai, Lai Chau areas. does anyone have any advice on hotels, villages that are best to base in, any things to be watchful against. i would like to go to ethnic villages, possibly buy some good weavings with good dyes and find some peace and quiet.

is the trekking difficult? my ankles restrict very difficult terrains or long distances.

is the bird flu an issue to be wary of in this area?

Tour of Sapa?  (6 Answers)

My sister and I will be touring Sapa in September/October and aren't sure of the best way to organise our trip. We will leave from Hanoi and would like to visit ethnic villages, markets, see the sights in the area and have some time to watch the world go by. If we go on an organised tour from Hanoi we may not get any time to ourselves; these tours are often full to the brim with activities and we prefer not to be rushed. Is it possible to get a train up there, book into a hotel then organise day or half day trips? We can go for 3 or 4 days. How can we travel around if we don't want to go on a motor bike? Which are the best markets? Do any of the tour companies do a more relaxed tour of the area with plenty of time to wander or is there not much to see if you don't want to go treking? Any information, ideas etc would be greatly appreciated!

Lao Cai weather

I'm leaving for a two-weeks' trip to Vietnam on Monday 21rst February. We are starting in the south and will be in Hanoi and later on to Sapa and Lao Cai in the first week of March. I live in Europe and it's still pretty cold around here. I have tried to determine what temperatures I should expect, especially in North Vietnam, but information is discordant to say the least. Can someone please advise? Thanks in advance!
