An enjoyable way to get to the beautiful town of Kampot is by going overland if you have the time.
1 Bus from Ekimai Eastern Bus Station opposite soi 63 Sukhumvit Road to Trat (6 hrs maybe)
2. From Trat take a sawngtheaw or minibus to Klong Yai (90 min)
3. Change to another sawngtheaw to Hat Lek by the border
4. take a moto to Koh Kong (30 min)
5. Bus from Koh Kong to Kampot. I heard that there is a daily direct bus now, but when i did this trip a few years ago i first took the bus to Sihanoukeville then share taxi to Kampot.
tip---I found Koh Kong not such a nice town so better leave Trat early in order to catch transport to Kampot.
The easiest way is to take a bus from BKK to Siem Reap is a long distance trip there maybe night trips to Siem Reap. Form Siem Real there are buses or mini bus to Kampot
Kampot is very beautiuful town, if you go to my travel page I have reviews of things to do in Kampot. Be sure to visit the national park Phnom Bokor......Kampot is not so busy comparing to other cities of Cambodia, hire a scooter is the way to go around especially going to National park
Davidjo's instructions are very good. I suggest you OVN in Trat, after the 6+hr bus ride from Ekimai Bus Stn in BKK. The Trat Bus Terminal is about 2km from the city center. Take a Songteow into a city center hotel. There are many in Trat. Get up early and hop a moto taxi or songteow back to the Bus Stn. Grab another Songteow or Mini Bus Hat Lek, or to the border. At the border, ignore all the Border Crossing Touts. Just walk to the Thai Exit Office, get the exit stamp. Walk 1 km to the Cambodian Immigration Office. Again ignore all the hustlers. It helps to have your Thai Exit Papers and Cambodian Immigration papers already filled out. You can usually download them online. Always carry 6 passport photos when crossing borders. take a mot to the Koh Kong Bus Stn. Catch a bus to Sihanoukville.
I did this in 2009. It's probably better served today. We did it in a day from Trat, Thailand to Sihanoukville, Cambodia in a long day. I think the Hwy from Koh Kong to Sihanoukville may be paved now. It was a rough gravel road in 2009.
