Doubtful Sound is larger and has a number of arms off the main fijord. While I enjoyed them both I found Doubtful Sound to be more majestic and the scenery and reflections in some of the arms (especially Hall Arm) was fantastic. I also saw more wildlife in Doubtful Sound.

I think it is quite different. While Milford Sound is more diverse and usually you see more wildlife there, the scenery more spectacular and compact, Doubtful Sound is huge, darker, seems more peaceful - and the travel is a bit more stressful because you are with a group the whole day. I think the drive to Milford Sound is far more spectacular than the boat/coach trip to Doubtful Sound, and there are endless possibilities of things to do along the way at your own pace, while on a Doubtful Sound daytrip everything is planned to fit into a schedule.

I would surely recommend to do a trip to Doubtful Sound if you have been at Milford Sound already, just to experience the vastness and diversity of Fiordland. And a visit to the Manapouri power station is a bonus.
