Places to see in Takayama

What are the must-see places in Takayama?

Anyone? Please post your faves here so I may have initial ideas
on where to start my trip. Thanks!

Would two days and two nights be enough to explore Takayama? I'm basically after the folk village, and seeing more of nature this side of Japan.

While in Takayama you must see Shorakawago (Ogimach) village. It si located short ride north west of Takayama. There may be a busses or taxis going to Shirakawago. Ask in your hotel.
It is a world heritage and much more interesting than Takayama.

Takayama itself is a beautiful (actually quite magic) place just to wander... the old streets, the lovely shops, the morning market, are all just great. The folk village is a good morning's activity but all over town are old houses you can look through (small charge) and the place where they store the procession floats and the temple next door is fascinating. If you are lucky to have good weather then walking for hours around town, along the river, through the gardens is well worth at least two nights and two days. Shirakawago is a good trip out from Takayama but much further than I expected (we were driving).

With the opening of the last missing section of the Tokai-Hokuriku Expressway on July 6, 2008, travel time between Takayama and Shirakawa-go was reduced from previously two hours to 50 minutes.

We drove on this highway in July 2008 and it was ..... something :-)
I have never seen so nicely done road in my life.
Funny thing was, the highway was so new it was not in our GPS Navigation.

I found a nice website with bus timetable for you

This bus line is the most popular way of accessing Shirakawa-go. Two round trips per day are operated along the entire route between Takayama and Kanazawa. Most of the other services are operated between Takayama and Shirakawa-go, with some continuing from Shirakawa-go to nearby Hirase Onsen and onwards to Maki.
