Swiss Travel Pass Query  (5 Answers)

I will be arriving to Zurich and taking the train to Lucerne after arrival. I will be in Lucerne for about a week, including day trips. From Lucerne I will be travelling to Colmar in France.

My question is - if I buy an 8 day Swiss Pass does it include the travel from Zurich to Lucerne, all the day trips from Lucerne and the Swiss train travel part on the way to Colmar (till Basel)? I'm just asking because i understand that not all routes are included in the pass and I don't want any surprises.

Thank you

Base suggestions for a trip to Switzerland  (13 Answers)

I will be in Switzerland in May for about 8, 9 days. I was thinking of staying in 2 places and doing day trips from there. It seems that Lucerne and Bern are good choices. Comments and suggestions are welcome. The main purpose of the trip is the usual - Alps, lakes, lush valleys, etc.
Can someone also tell me about the Swiss card. I will be using trains for all my trips in the country.
Thank you

Comments/feedback on my 2 days Appenzell area trip

Will be going to Switzerland for 10 days next year in Feb and basically we have planned everything except the last couple of days in Appenzell and would like to ask for your suggestion

At first, we were going to Ebenalp for the cable car, hike and the restaurant but now we will cancel it because even it is available to go the cablecar, its really no point going up since alot of things are closed such as the restaurant and the covered full of snow, so I guess we will come again during summer next time!

So therefore, we decided to go to Santis for a night + cable car. Then the next day Honhen Kasten for the cable car + revolving that turns 360 degrees restaurant. Here is the itinerary and please feel free to give me any comments or suggestion!

Day 8 - Zermatt to St. Mortiz (Glacier Express). Will arrive at 4:30pm, I dunno what excursion we should do, given it will get dark at around 6:30pm anyway. If you can give suggestion what we can do after our arrival to St. Mortiz would be appreciated!

Day 9 - 7am depart from St Mortiz train station. Arrive Säntis location (requires 5 1/2 hour travel by train/bus). Check-in @ the Santis Hotel around 12:30pm. Then go for cable car (which is basically just next to the hotel), enjoy the mountain nearby, do snowshoeing and fun activities for the rest of the day. Dinner at the hotel/enjoy facility at hotel (walking in the snow outside, spa in the hotel etc)

Day 10 - Checkout hotel in morning. Head to Honher Kasten for cable car + for lunch @ the revolving 360 degree restaurant. After that, stay around for 1 hour or so. Around late afternoon, go to Appenzell town and walk for couple of hours till dark & shop closed till 6:30pm. Then head back to Zurich at night before taking the flight back in the next day!

Let me know what you think and its doable!

Thank you in advance!

St Moritz train travel and accomodation  (2 Answers)

We are a couple of Australians who will be in Salzburg for two days and have booked a rail ticket for the 28th Oct that is not refundable to Thun via Munich, Zurich and Bern for Euro138 for both of us (1st class).
It has now been suggested to us that we travel from Salzburg to St Moritz via Landeck and overnight in St Moritz and the next day travel to Thun via Andermatt.
We were wondering if the suggestion should be considered and we waste the existing ticket. I tried to look at fares from Salzburg on 28th October to St Moritz on the sbb website but it was saying it was too close to travel date to quote price?
We have lots of time to stay in Thun so don't know if St Moritz is something worth seeing from Thun later during our stay.
If the St Moritz overnight trip is best done on the way to Thun any suggestions of hotels in St Moritz that are close to station.
Any suggestions or help with trips from Thun as day or overnight would be appreciated.

Pass for family, visiting BO for 6 days  (5 Answers)

Hello. If someone knowledgeable can review and advice on the right travel pass for the destinations below, it will be of great help. In addition I have a couple more questions listed below. Many thanks in advance for your assistance.

Family configuration: husband, wife, 2 children (12-15 years old) and 1 youth 18 years old.
Duration: Aug 26- Sep 1

Below are the destinations and modes of transpo:
1. Train from Zurich airport to Bern (one-way)
2. Lauterbrunnen. to Wengen (train) ;
3. Wengen to Kl Scheidegg (train) ;
4. Grindelwald Grund – Maennlichen (Gondola) ;
5. Maennlichen to Wengen (cable car)
6. Train from Lauterbrunnen station to Interlaken Ost for Brienz;
7. Train from Interlaken Ost to Brienz.
8. Steam train from Brienz station to Rothorn (return journey)
9. Train from Lauterbrunnen to Grindelwald ;
10. First gondola to the First ski resort;
11. Ride the “First Flieger”
12. Train from Lauterbrunnen to Bern and back
13. Brunig Panoramic Expressway between Interlaken and Lucerne (one way)
14. Train from Lucerne to Zurich (one way)

QUESTIONS:
1. Is REGIONAL BO PASS , the most economical option, or you would advice HALF-FARE PASS ?
2. With REGIONAL BO PASS or HALF-FARE PASS, do I have to buy STP ?
3. For 12-16 years old, do I have to buy JUNIOR TRAVEL CARD or SWISS FAMILY CARD? And do I pay any sum towards that purchase?
4. For 18 year old, do I buy Swiss Youth Pass, or just the REGIONAL BO PASS?

Kind regards

Car Rental vs Public Transportation  (4 Answers)

Greetings

Is renting car for 6-7 days more economical than public transpo, taking into account we are a family of 5, and will start our trip from Zurich airport and go straight to Bern, followed by Interlaken, Lucerne and back in Zurich (to catch the flight out)?

If renting car is advisable, what is a good choice (value for money)?

Thanks

Planning Interlaken  (3 Answers)

Greetings . We are family of 5 (3 teen age children and 2 adults), looking to visit Switzerland.

I have set aside 4.5 days inclusive of checkin and checkout. Is it more then sufficient or just enough for the following plan?

PLAN:

1. Up and down to the Brienzer Rothorn by steam train (is this a day long trip, and what is the associated cost?)
2. Take cabin ride from Grindelwald to Mannlichen and walk to Kleine Scheideck (is this a day long trip, and what is the associated cost?)
3. Murren-Allmendhubel cableway. Depart from Northwestern edge of Murren. At the destination enjoy the panoramic view of lauterbrunnen.
4. Wengen: Trummelbach Falls.
5. Baregg-stieregg walk: highly recommended. 1 hour walk but set aside 1 day

a. How doable is this plan?
b. Anything worthy missing?
c. Do you suggest to take something out, if it's less attractive or similar to an existing attraction?
d. What costs should we factor in for the above suggestions?
e. For each listed attraction, is it a day long activity or less?

Thanks

6 days in June  (1 Answer)

greetings to our swiss experts :)

This is for a friend if mine. They are a couple with 2 young children (about 11 and 12 yr old), Indians.

Tell me if you approve or if you have any further suggestions:

Day 1. reaching zurich airport by 10 am

Option A : Visit Rhine fall and do Zurich city tour and reach Lucerne by evening
Option B: Visit Rhine fall, Travel to Lucerne early and spend evening doing Rigi

Option C: travel to lucerne immediately - Mt. Pilatus & Rigi or anything else you suggest

Day 2 : Must do: Titlis.

Maybe: If there will be time anything you may suggest

Day 3:

Take Golden pass line to Interlaken/ Montreaux

option A: If Montreaux Want to Visit Gruyere and Broc - cheese and chocolate factory tours - stay at Montreaux or travel to Lauterbrunnen to spend night (Would prefer to reach Lauterbrunnen)

Option B: If Interlaken - can we visit Gruyere and return to Interlakem/ lauterbrunnen. If not spend day in Lauterbrunnen, exploring the waterfalls or anything you suggest (Negative point - miss Gruyere - the kids would have enjoyed the cheese and chocolate factory tour)

Day 4 Jungfrauouch and Trümmelbachfäll, - stay at Lauterbrunnen

Day 5 Ballenberg - stay at lauterbrunnen

Day 6:

Option A - Schynige pallete/ First/ Harder Klum and then train to zurich airport for return flight to india at 22:00

Option B - Leave for Zurich early and spend day zurich city tour and the rhine fall on this day (Applicable if we take option C on day 1)

Points to consider:
We will have luggage on day 1 , day 3 and day 6.
Budget and convenience are both important considerations

Question 1
Please help us decide between the options on each day and firm up the itinerary

Question 2
With this itinerary - Is it better to opt for 8 day swiss travel pass (Cost 52,000 INR ) or 6 days Regional BO Pass (Cost 41,104 INR) or Swiss half fare card (Cost 21,000 INR) or Jungfrauouch pass ? Or a combination of four day swiss travel pass and the half fare card or any other combination.

Hotel Stay

2 nights Lucern 2 nights lauterbrunnen and 1 night montreaux/ Vevey (or 3 nights lauterbrunnen)

Would greatly appreciate any further help and suggestions :)

Visit to Mt. Titlis and Interlaken from Zurich Airport by train

Hello,
I am planning two days visit to Switzerland (from Cologne, Germany) from 14th May and 15th May, 2016 with my wife and daughter (1 1/2 years old).
I would be reaching zurich airport at 820 am. I am planning to visit Mt. Titlis first by train (Zurich - Luzern-Engelberg-TItlis) and then while coming back I am planning to go to Interlaken using this route Mt. Titlis-Luzern -Engelberg to Interlaken Ost and stay there. Next day I want to visit Jungfrau early morning and come back in the afternoon to Interlaken and return journey to Zurich by train. I have return flight at 2000 from Zurich airport.
do you have any suggestion on this itinerary or should I add any must see destination and make this trip for 3 days?
Please also guide which pass would be beneficial for me (2 days or 3 days visit). Do you think that we should have thick jackets during this period or normal jackets would be okay?

MY husband and I are currently in Provence, near Avignon, and we would love to drive up to Switzerland for a day. It looks like Geneva is about 3.5 hours away. We are wondering if it is worth the drive to spend about 6 hours wandering around, and what area would be good to go. We will also have our small dog with us. Thanks!
