Stuttgart with two young children........Help?

Hi Second Posting the first ended in up with the Moroccos and Marakesh's!
Any suggestions, we are flying into Stuttgart in January and are yet to book our accomodation. To a certain extent price isn't a problem, but its my daughters 10th birthday while we are there, so just to make it memorable. Why did I book Stuttgart......I imagined Snow and Log Cabins, not very good at Geography! Is there somewhere within an hour or so that fits this criteria or is Stuttgart child friendly enough, it seems a very grown up place to go. My daughter would love Chateaus etc and my son is a seven year old action man. We are happy with a couple of quiet days of walks etc, but we are only there for four days, Thanks.

Not far from Stuttgart are the Black Forest and the Swabian Alb. In January there is will be mostlikely snow there. No 100% guarantee however.

Swabian Alb is a bit closer and has castles and even more castle ruins.

Burg Hohenzollern near Hechingen
Schloss Lichtenstein near Bad Urach
(however closed in January)
Schloss Hohenzollern in Sigmaringen
(this is from the interior one of the most interesting castles)

A castle hotel in this area would be Schloss Haigerloch. Also a cute small town.

More budget friendly and a more medieval castle would be the youth hostel Burg Wildenstein. In the Upper Danube valley not far from Sigmaringen. One of the few never destroyed castle. Absolute outstanding location.

In Stuttgart for children
Wilhelma (zoo/botanical garden) - one of the most pupular in Germany
Das LEUZE - nice combination of mineral bath and fun pool. Stuttgart has the 2nd biggest mineral springs in Europe. There is a special Kinderland for kids up to 7 years.

Museums also of interest for kids
Mercedes-Benz Museum
Museum Am Löwentor (fossils, dinosaurs - huge local content from Stuttgart and region)

Stuttgart Tourism

Is there a Sunday among the days you are there?
Because on Sundays in January (past the 6th January) there are normally always some Narrentreffen (gathering of traditional carnival clubs) in this region.
