Seeing the northern lights in Iceland

What's the best time to visit Iceland to catch the Northern Lights but also to get enough hours of daylight to see the beautiful countryside? We had been thinking of spending New Year in Reykjavik - it sounds like fun but our priorities when visiting would be to get around and see the country rather than partying. Thanks :o)

The time for the Northern Lights is mainly Nov-March, you won't however get much daylight here around the New Year I'm afraid... And remember... no one can guarantee that you'll see the Northern Lights.... there have to be the right conditions... clear and cold weather. Remember to enjoy what the country offers even if it isn't exactly as you dream about beforehand :-).
