Hello, we are traveling to lake Garda in August and would like to hire bikes. Does anyone know of any easy bike rides from Riva del Garda or Sirmione that would be suitable for young children (8 and 10)?
Also, does anyone have any recommendations for outdoorsy activities suitable for children at or near either of these locations?
We'll be staying in Sirmione for the second part of the holiday and we're hoping to use this as a base to explore places such as Venice and Verona- are the roads around Sirmione likely to be very congested?
Riva del Garda has a lakeside pedestrian/cycle path from the centre of Riva right along to Torbole. From Torbole there is also a path alongside the river to the pretty town of Arco. Sirmione is not as good for off road cycle paths but if you can get to Peschiera del Garda you have a few suitable paths. There is one alongside the River Mincio, heading south towards Mantova, a path from Fornaci on the west of the town that will take you into Peschiera and from the east of the town centre the path goes as far as Pacengo.
These paths and others are clearly marked on the above maps.
There 'beach' areas at Riva, pebbles rather than sand, where you can swim in the lake as well as the opportunity to take part in many watersports. The children may also enjoy the revolving cable car from nearby Malcesine up to Monte Baldo.
From Sirmione you could go to the Theme Parks near Lazise
There is also Parco Natura Viva
I'm afraid the answer to your final question is yes the roads around Sirmione are quite congested most of the time, not just in August.
