Can I buy the train ticket for this trip in one go or do I have to buy a ticket to milan and then buy another ticket to Malpensa when I arrive in Milan? I have booked a hotel at Malpensa for the night before our flight home. Thankyou
It's better to buy separate tickets because, if you do not spend any time in Milano, you will arrive at the main railway station and reach Malpensa by bus right out of the station (the Malpensa express from Milano Centrale is not so "express") but if intend to spend some time in Milano, then it's better you reach Milano Cadorna station and take the real Malpensa Express from there.
The choice is yours.
You can take a train from Milan Centrale to Malpensa if you wish ( have done so and it's absolutely fine). Or you can take the Metro from Milan Centrale to Milan Nord Cadorna station and take a train from there. Personally, I would not want to take myself and my bags on the Metro just to change stations...I'd take the train from Centrale.
Use the official Italian railway website in English to find times and details:
Fares are not shown because the Nod Cadorna route involves using the Metro. Not sure why the Centrale>Malpensa fares aren't shown, but you should be able to buy a through ticket from the machines or ticket office at Desenzano. If not, it's easy enough to buy a ticket once you are in Centrale...there are loads of machines and they all have English language options.
If you decide to take the bus from Centrale then you'll have to buy the ticket once you arrive at the station (from the bus ticket offices at ground level) or...perhaps a better option, given that buses can and do get full-up...online in advance if you wish to use the Malpensa Shuttle:
