In one day i think u can cover Missourie and the near by places. Missourie is 28 Km from Dehradun and in Jan there will be snow too. Dont forget to buy Rudrksh and other precious\semi precious stones and beads which are available at shivpuri . This situates almost en route to Missourie. Have lunch at Rice Bowl at Missourie.
Also IMA, FRI buliding and Wild life Institute etc are very gud places to visit.
have a great time.
There are lot of places which is bit far from Dehradun. Like, Lancedwn, Chakrata etc..
One day is not sufficient then.

In Shimla, see Christ Church, the Gaiety Theatre, and Vice-Regal Lodge (now the Indian Institute of Advanced Studies).

I would definitely agree with ushar, Mussoorie is well worth a visit. You can catch the bus from Dehradun and it took about 1 and a half hours. When you get there there is a cable-car that runs from 'the Mall' (main street in Mussoorie) up to the top of the hill from where you get stunning views of the Indian Himalayas (Shivling Mountain is one of the most striking from that vantage point). Another trip that we quite enjoyed when we went was to visit the Tapkeshwar Mandir (a short Rickshaw ride from town) - it is a very peacful spot and one of the nicest Mandirs that I visited when I went to India. If you are interested in museums there is the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, it is a very traditional museum with lots of specimens and glass cases but the grounds are lovely to have a wander around (I think it was only Rs. 1 to get into the grounds and more for the museum itself).

As for Shimla... I did a walking tour of the town with a local guide (I probably paid videshi prices for it, but I enjoyed it). It took us out to the vice-Regal lodge and through some of the woodlands and down to Chadwick falls - which would be a bit more spectacular if it had a bit of rain coiming through. It was nice just to get off the Mall and wandering around. I am not sure how you are getting to Shimla but catching the Himalayan Queen train from Kalka is great - you get some wonderful scenery on the way up there, the journey was about 5 hours or so from memory.

Have a great time - they are both great places!

You can select Koti Resort which is about half an hour out of Shimla if you wish to stay for a day or two. Its designed as a Swiss Chalet in 1992 has 40 elegantly furnished spacious rooms. Built along a central lawn each room is individually designed in such a way it offers a breathtaking view of the forest aglow with the setting sun. I have stayed there and enjoyed every moment of peace it has to offer. Their new premium rooms reek of luxury at an affordable price. For areas that you can visit .. check out this link
