We have only four days in Sardinia! Two of the experts in this forum mentioned beautiful areas in the mid section of the island. Since we're landing in Olbia, we're trying to decide if we should concentrate in the middle or make the drive down to Cagliari.
No, Cagliari is definitely NOT a must. If you want to visit a city, Alghero is much, much nicer and more vibrant. Castelsardo is nice, too.
Anyway, do visit the Parco Nazionale del Golfo di Orosei e del Gennargento in the mid section of the island. It is awesome, with breathtaking views in the Supramonte mountains. Dorgali, Oliena and Orgosolo are some of the typical villages. You can make nice walks there, as well as in the Valle di Lanaitho.
Thanks so much! We're decided to skip Cagliari and spend two nights on the west coast, probably in Alghero, and two on the east coast near Parco Nazionale del Golfo.
Any recommendations as to where to stay?
In the countryside near Alghero (less than 5 min. by car) we stayed at Country Hotel Vessus that we liked very much. Excellent restaurant on site!
At the eastcoast we stayed in Cala Gonone which is a nice beach town but too remote if you want to make trips in the mountains. If we would have known, we would have stayed in Santa Maria Navarrese or Arbatax (we like to be near the water). If you want to stay more inland, try to find hotels in Dorgali or Orgosolo.
Easy. Google "Ogliastra" and look at images. Then go and see as many as you can in the flesh.
Cagliari is mostly an ugly town, sprawling around an ancient port and a small crowded old town. Fine for a day but not good enough to justify an entire visit to Sardinia.
