Even if we know that this is not the best period to visit Sa Pa, we have no choice. My husband and me will arrive in Hanoi and wanto to have a two-three days trip in Sapa. We want some advise about the mean to get there. We've been told that night train is safer, but you lose most of the magnificent scenery. What about hiring a 4x4 jeep? Too much expensive? And safety?
Like many or most people visiting Sa Pa from Ha Noi..I used the night train..to and from Sa Pa..Traveling by day ensures that you would LOOSE a day up there and a day that you gain in Ha Noi and Im sure that you'd prefer to make the most of your available time there so maybe day time transit if its available isnt the best idea anyhow unless you have loads of time.
Im not 100 % sure of that the run travels during daylight hours but I have read that the possibility exists...its been a while..more than a year that I was researching my journey there and almost a year since I visited.
The hotel that I pre booked for my stay there offered the service( reservation and train station pu in Lao Cai ) as an add on cost and really made transit easy between Ha Noi and Sa Pa.
There are a few "private" companies that run carriages attached to the train that offer 4 and 2 berth compartments,Livitrains being the one that I used. You can book direct through them or as I mentioned its possible that your hotel could book it for you at a nominal cost.
I didnt see anywhere up there that rented 4x4 but motorbikes are quite easy to get your hands on...if you're well experienced driver, the roads of the Muong Hoa Valley are quite iffy and not for the reckless or inexperienced but if the weather is co-operative that for sure you can get one to access the valley on your own.
Id suggest taking a look around here at VT and [possibly here for more information.
Drop a line if you like...
Just in case...

thank you for your tips. it is very probable we will go to sa pa by train with livitrans, as you advice. what about the weather in the month of july? is it hot? i know rain is frequent in this period, but all the day long or just temporary storms?
Cant help you there...Try Google.."weather Sa Pa July"..and see what information you get..
Weather patterns are a mess everywhere these days so the possibilities are hit and miss I think anymore.I lucked out with four solid days of sunshine while visiting Sa Pa so hopefully you will too..
Good that you're starting to collect information now....the more the better.
thank you the same, gregor, i know that it is difficult to do if it will be rainy in july in sa pa, better if we look at the weather forecast when we're there, and then decide whato to do. i wish you a good 2011 full in travels!
Thank you Anna...even if its rainy and or misty...from the looks of some peoples photos it still looks amazingly beautiful...just adds a different "slant" to the whole experience..
All the best to you also in this New Year!!
this link could be useful
don't worry about rain in S.E.Asia, when it rains it could rain also cats and dogs! everything gets wet, so have something good for your camera.
Benvenuta su VT :)

brgds/atuan from viet nam
thanks a lot (ma sei italiano/a?!?)
You should go by sleeper train in 4 berth cabin.
It's not go to travel 380km by car .
From Hanoi to Sapa is about 400km then the best way by train.
