Okay... My plan is to go to Santa Fe, NM September 2012, but am trying to figure out what I need to plan for (I'm a freak about writing and rewriting and rewriting lists, ect)...
My main reason for going is Georgia O'Keeffe. I'm hoping to be able to go on the tour of her home/studio. The problem is that I don't drive because of a vision problem.. Is there a way to get from Santa Fe to Abiquiu relatively simply without personally driving there?
What you are looking for is Ghost Ranch. This is mainly a conference/retreat center The only thing I can find that MIGHT be an escorted tour from Santa Fe is this:
The website is not very clear - doesn't specify if this is escorted from Santa Fe so you should probably call them at:
Or email them at:
It also involves a hike- =not sure if that works with your vision issues. Her home is also not open to visitors as it's too fragile. ButIi am in touch with a VT member who has family in the Abiquiu area who may be of some help so feel free to drop a line to GentleSpirit at:
[original VT link]
The house in Abiquiu is open for tours (okeeffemuseum.org/her-houses..., it's the Ghost Ranch that's not open for tours. But, as far as I know, there's no public transportation at all going out there. Unfortunately, you'd either have to hire someone in Santa Fe to drive you out there, or drive yourself. Be sure to visit the museum in Santa Fe though.
Good job, Colin - I had the two confused. Thanks for straightening it out!
Just rechecked: it's the Ghost Ranch house that's closed to visitors.
So confusing as they're both in the general Abiquiu area (town and reservoir.)
I would have to ask my family as I'm not 100% sure. But I don't remember any public transport going out that way. Maybe it would be better to look for transportation options from Espanola, which is much closer to Abiquiu.
Thanks [VT member 93f85]! The hike isn't an issue. I just have no perif. vision, so I can't pass the vision test for a license.
Right. Ghost Ranch is closed. It's owned by Juan what's-his-name that "took care of her" for about 20 years... something like that. I'll look into the guided tour thing. If I can't make it to Abiquiu, I may go to Taos. Thanks [VT member 93f85]!
Lynnie, a friend of mine recently bought the Stone House Lodge near El Vado Reservoir. I have been wanting to go visit after school started when it is less busy. Abiquiu is on the way. I was going to offer you a ride but then noticed that you said 2012. It's hard to say where I may be in Sep 2012, but remind me again when the time gets nearer and maybe I can help.
Ray, you're just peaches!!!
I would love to see you arrange to give her a ride a year from now,,,,gotta love it
