So many tips but to add some:

Take advantage of the mass transit Red Line. There are quite a few in Hollywood. You can see all the major landmarks easily without dealing with a lot of car traffic.

If you are staying in Hollywood, go for a major name hotel like Best Western, Hilton (at Universal City)- unless you are on a major budget. Motels are OK but some are very sketchy- on the dirty side, by drug infested areas, etc

If you like classy, stick with West Hollywood, for the better restaurants and clubs, or if Hollywoood, hang out in the renovated Hollywood and Vine area, at/ by the W hotel.

Catch a major musical/play at Pantages. Very beautiful venue!

For bargain shopping, shop along Hollywood Blvd in the mom and pop shops. For convenience, there are in town chain drug stores, including like Walgreens (flagship one) as well as Trader Joes and other markets for toiletries and more.

Well my friend, you are only about 400 miles from Los Angeles and Hollywood. I can certainly direct you arounf Hollywood, and all you can see there. But before I do that, I need to know what kind of time frame you have for this venture. You can take the Amtrac train down to Los Angeles Union Station, and there is a nice clean uncomplicated subway you can pick up right there that will take you straight into Hollywood. Of course you need to ger from San Ramon to Oakland.

Of course you can do this with a rentacar, it is just that parking in and around Hollywood is really difficult, and most of the stuff you might like is within walking distance.

You would need a couple of days in Hollywood, so four days all together A day on the train, two days for fun, and the train day back.

Can you work with this? If you can, then I will guide you through all the things you should be experiencing in Hollyweird..........d:o)
