We will be in San Francisco at the end of June. When would be a good time to do the seaplane tour, I was thinking about the fog. 10am, 1pm and 3pm. Also is it worth going on the Monterey and Carmen for a day trip. Thanks
Growing up at my aunt's house in Pacific Grove and the Watsonville area there was always fog during the summer months. in the Monterey Bay Area. In fact the coastal area of California from about Santa Maria to Mendoncino County is beset with fog during the summer months during the late evening and early morning hours. However it is not a dense fog and by noon to early afternoon it nearly always burns off. Hopefully you should have clear weather in the afternoon.
If you decide to rent a car the drive can take you a little over 3 hours depending on traffic from San Francisco. I would definitely recommend taking the coastal route Highway 1. For spectacualr scenery on the way stop at San Gregorio to see the beach, Ano Nuevo State Park to see the seals and sea lions in a more natural setting, quick stop in Santa Cruz to see the Boardwalk and drive along the ocean,
Monterey and Carmel is such a beautiful area that even a day trip is worth the time to spend in this scenic area. Take a look at the VT pages on the Monterey area for some good tips. Just dress for some cold mornings and evenings and you will have a fantastic time.

As for the seaplane tour I am assuming you are talking about the one in San Francisco. I have never taken it but from what I hear the tour that includes the area just north of the Golden Gate Bridge is the most spectacular tour. It includes Muir Woods, Point Reyes as well as the flight over the Golden Gate bridge. The same comments about fog in Monterey apply to San Francisco. Hopefully by mid afternoon you will have a wonderful ride and be able to take some great photos.
Below is the link to the group that I am familiar with that is the most popular. Groupon on ocassion offers discounts on these flight so look for it in advance
Monterey would definitely be worth your time, if just for a day trip. If possible, try to work it out that you do the trip on a weekday (Monday - Thursday) because, in the summer, traffic coming here from the Bay Area is pretty horrendous on weekends, but usually fine on weekdays.
June can be rough for fog here, but it more often than not clears up by midday. Even with the fog, it's worth coming down. It's still pretty.
1 PM and yes.
Molly- Here is the groupon discount on the seaplane trip that you are considering. They seem to run this frequently so look for it.every so often.
You can also take the bus from SF over to where the seaplanes take off in Mill Valley without renting a car
