Salvador da Bahia

Only 2 days, early February 2014! : (

We arrive at 7:30PM on a Saturday and depart at 06:45AM on Tuesday. We have booked accommodation in the Pelourinho. What must we see/do in such a short period of time there. We are wide open to things/experiences/food etc. We enjoy good food/drink/music/culture/off the beaten path etc. We are all "young" early 50 year olds.

The Pelourinho itself is the most interesting part of Salvador. The churches and the little museum at the eastern end of the quarter are worth visiting. It also has two superb restaurants: Uaua (try the marinated lime rinds for dessert) and the haute cuisine Maria Mata Mouro. The mercado at the bottom of the cliff is worth a couple of hours: you'll find everything from produce stands to art galleries as well as two decent restaurants. At SESC you can sample local dishes from a large buffet; they are prepared by chefs-in-training and the meals are very inexpensive. SESC also mounts a floor show each night. Solar do Unhao is a more professional dinner show; take a taxi to and from.
