4-5 days in St Petersburg  (9 Answers)

Would anybody have recommendations for things for c. 12 (academic) high school students to see in St Petersburg, or would it be worth going on a day trip out of the city? Is Valaam Monastery too far? We'll be going in the latter half of February 2017, and obviously we're most interested in the history and literature but I'm thinking maybe there might be some little-known spiritual place inside or outside the city that might be worth a visit?

All suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million.

Peterhof and Catherine's Palace  (6 Answers)

Would love to visit both Peterhof and Catherine's Palace in December. I realize winter is not ideal, especially for Peterhof, but would still like to go.
To save time, is reserving a tour a more time-effective way of doing it compared to using public transport? Is it possible to request a tour, visiting Catherine's Palace early in the morning and visiting Peterhof later in the day before returning to St Petersburg?
Which is the best tour company to go with?

New Years Eve ball or restaurant  (6 Answers)

Hi everyone,

Hoping for some advice on where to go for New Years Eve in Saint Petersburg...

I realise that this is a very important time for Russian families to spend time with each other. However, for guests to the country, what would you suggest would be the most interesting thing to do / place to visit to get a taste of NYE festivities?

I know a lot of people will wander along Nevsky Prospect to gather in Palace Square. Not particularly into drunken crowds, so would rather consider something like:

1. A quieter place but still good views to see the fireworks... Perhaps Strelka?
2. The best restaurant that will offer excellent food with festive / cultural entertainment... perhaps L'Europe or Bellevue Brasserie?
3. A NYE ball or other cultural occasion, such as the Tsar's Ball at Catherine Palace, but perhaps not quite so prohibitively expensive!

Thank you for any advice!

Best time to buy ballet tickets  (6 Answers)

I heard on a podcast some local recommend you buy tickets for performances in Saint Petersburg directly from the box office rather than purchasing them online beforehand. Apparently, they are much cheaper that way.
Anyone else care to weigh in on this? From personal experience, is it much cheaper to purchase tickets upon arrival in Saint Petersburg? What about performances selling out?
Would love to know your opinion.

I've done some research and it seems there will be an ice hockey game on at the Ice Palace on December 29, but unfortunately I cannot read Russian so not a 100% sure. Could somebody please confirm? And if there is, how do I go about getting tickets for the game?
Know almost nothing about ice hockey but would love to attend a game!

Need advice  (16 Answers)

I and my husband are going to travel to Scandinavian Countries and Saint Petersburg, Russia next June. We need to know which of the 2 periods bellow is the best time to go to Saint Petersburg, I mean, less crowded:
1. From May 29th to June 6th;
2) From Jun 20th to Jun 27th

We are from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and we are going to buy the air ticket this week. It is important to know if we will go to Saint Petersburg in the begining (period 1) or in the end (period 2) of our trip.

Thanks in advance, Luiza

2 day itinerary while on cruise  (7 Answers)

There are four of us that will be on a Baltic Cruise and we will be in St Petersburg on Saturday and Sunday mid August. I am in the process of looking at booking a private tour rather than a cruise ship tour (the private tour organises the Tourist visa for us). We are not that interested in too many museums (especially art) and churches. We all enjoy history including the Romanovs as well as the Communist period and would like to see some of every day life in St Petersburg if possible and we are interested in a canal ride and a subway ride. I have had one tour company detail the below itinerary - can I have an opinion if the itinerary seems good - or is anything you would take out and replace with something else? Thank you all in advance.

Hermitage Museum with wheelchair  (11 Answers)

My sister will be two days in St.Petersburg in July, on a cruise. Is it possible to enter the museum and see at least part of it on a wheelchair? I think that the back entrance was flat, and I don't remember if there were stairs between the rooms/halls. People who personally have no problem with stairs - don't notice them.

Are there stairs between the rooms? Is there a free day to avoid because of crowds? If it's very crowded and she sits, all the people standing around will let her see only the ceilings.

Where can she get a good guide? We had a excellent one but that was in 2003.

student trip (nurses) to St. Petersburg  (9 Answers)

We are a group around 50 Norwegian nursing students who wants to have a trip to St Petersburg next year. We are planning 6 nights there, with 3-4 days of studying. I therefore wonder if anyone know about relevant museums, organisations (within health/socialcare), suggestions for people who can teach us something relevant for nurses or for example about the Russian´s health care system. Please give me contact information if you have or a link.

Hermitage and Catherine Palace  (3 Answers)

I and my wife shall be in Saint Petersburg for two days on 22nd and 23rd Sept 2015.(i.e. next Tuesday and Wednesday). I understand we have no choice but to visit Hermitage on Tuesday and Catherine Palace on Wednesday. Please advice whether we should book online and travel or our own or take a conducted tour which appears pretty costly. We don't actually need a Guide as audio guides are sufficient and available in both places. We are unable to judge the crowd pressure in these two paces on these days and definitely do not want to miss this opportunity. Also I have only the 1pm on wards slot available on Tuesday for the Hermitage!

The best and most economical metro card/ticket for a group  (5 Answers)

We're a group of 16 adults visiting St. Petersburg from August 03- 07 . We'll be moving around together and using the Metro system most of the time . My question is: what's the best and most economical metro card or ticket for us ? I've heard of a new money- saving card that allows unlimited rides and can be used by the whole group all at once. If such a card ever exists ,how would the woman at the cashier window be able to understand that this's the type of card/ ticket I need ? in other words , How best to express myself to her in Russian ? Your help is greatly appreciated .

Saint Petersburg  (4 Answers)

Is this workable:

25 May Mon Day 03 : Moscow Vnukovo VKO - St. Petersburg Pulkovo LED (Taxi)–Aeroflot Rossiya SU6124 flight 09.30 – 11.00. St. Petersburg – Have driver & guide pick up directly from airport to Pushkin (1 Hr.) for Catherine Palace as per appointment time (closed on Tuesday & last Monday except for Summer, 670R, 30 min.). See the spacious airy ballroom, the “Grand Hall” or the “Hall of Lights”, with a spectacular painted ceiling, and comprises numerous distinctively decorated smaller rooms, including the reproduced Amber Room. Visiting the Imperial park, after the palace, and possibly the cute little town of Pushkin.

Drive along the ‘Great Perspective’ famous today as Nevsky Prospect, lined with marble palaces of Russian royalty and aristocracy. Visit St. Issac’s Cathedral - the main church of the Russian Empire. Later, visit to The Peter and Paul Fortress - the original citadel of St. Petersburg, Russia, founded by Peter the Great in 1703 and built to Domenico Trezzini’s designs from 1706-1740.

Evening at Leisure or view ‘opening of the bridges’ along Neva River cruise. OR C-189 Submarine Museum. Renaissance St. Petersburg Baltic Hotel. Pochtamtskaya Str 4 St. Petersburg - 190 000, RU. +78123804000

26 May Tue Day 04 : St. Petersburg – Visit the Hermitage Museum (closed on Monday, 600R o18), a museum of art and culture in St. Petersburg. It is the largest and oldest museums in the world with collections comprising of nearly three million items including the largest collection of paintings in the world.

Proceed to Peterhof (closed on Monday, 700R o18, 45 min). It is famous for its series of palaces and gardens known as the Peterhof Palace, laid out on the orders of the Russian Tsar, Peter the Great and sometimes called the ‘Russian Versailles’. Later, visit the Grand Palace entering by the ornate Ceremonial Staircase and see the Ballroom, Throne Room, the Western Chinese Study, the Drawing Room, the Imperial Suite, the Oak Study Room and the Crown Room. Visit Faberge museum.

From there, visit Church on Spilled Blood's interior, and maybe a canal cruise to see more of the city that is harder to see on foot. We could visit the Faberge Museum and palace, or visit Peter and Paul Fortress/Cathedral because they are open later.

Tonight, we discover traditional Russian dance and music during an elegant reception at the Russian Folklore show.

How do we fiat all this in??

We have to go to Pushkin directly from the airport, to be able to see. How long will that take? Can we aim for the 1 pm slot (Our flight reaches at 11 am)?

How and where do we hire minibus/van for 9 of us (including 1person 74 year old)?

We would need English speaking guide / Driver and van/bus on all days I think? How and where to book these at a decent rate?

Thanks friends

Less than 2 days in St Petersburg  (8 Answers)

We are 9 of a family, including 1 Sr. Citizen 74 years, and 4 children (11, 12, 14, 18 year old).

We arrive at St Petersburg airport at about 11 am, from Moscow. Our hotel is Renaissance Baltic at Pochtamtskaya Str. 4. We leave for Helsinki by the 6.40 am Allegro Train on 27th May morning.

We would like to see the Pushkin -- Catherine's Palace (i think on 25th itself, as I believe it is closed on Tuesday the 26th). How do we go about this? Do we go directly from airport bu private van/minibus? How do we arrange van with English speaking driver or guide?

What else can we do on this day?

We would like to visit the Hermitage and Winter Palace, The riverfront and the opening of the bridges etc.?

How do we capture the essence in the short time that we have? What all can we do and see? Any activities??

How do we reach the train so early in the morning of 27th May, from hotel??

I know that these are a lot of questions, but please do help.

Thanks in advance.

Helicopter tour over Saint Petersburg  (4 Answers)

Hello everyone!

Is anyone of you interested in sharing the costs of a helicopter tour? Me and my boyfriend are going to Petersburg next week and I want to surprise him with a helicopter tour. Unfortunately, the tour is too expensive for me and I can't afford the costs all on my own (; We would fly with a 3-person helicopter, the price is always the same: 23.500 rubles (I already got an discount of 2500 rubels). That means that if I would find one more who would like to take the tour with us, the price would be about 7.840 rubles. I would really, really love to take the heli-tour, because I think it's a lifetime experience. And what's more: the ruble is currently down - that means that this tour probably will never be that "cheap" again (;

Many thanks in advance Judith

Opera at Mariinsky or Ballet Mikhailovsky Theatre  (5 Answers)

I have never been to the ballet nor opera but would like to try when in Russia. As I understand Mariinsky is the most beautiful and impressive theatre but when I am in St Petersburg they are showing opera not ballet. It makes sense to see ballet when in Russia rather than opera but Mariinsky is more beautiful.
What would you recommend for someone who has never seen ballet nor opera and only been to the theatre a few time. I'm not very 'artsy'.
Many thanks in advance
