I will be visiting Paris, Mont St Michel, and Tours in April by train/buses (I do not drive!). Can anyone tell me how I would plan a 1 or 2 night visit to Rocamadour? Is it possible by train or bus? I had only intended on visiting Western France (a circuitous route via train starting in Paris to MSM then to the Loire Valley then back to Paris) but when I saw pictures of Rocamadour, I wanted to go there too! Suggestions? Thanks!
How exciting. I love planning trips to difficult places ! The nearest railway station to Rocamadour is GRAMAT and I imagine that there is a bus link.
Am not too familiar with public rail in these parts but you can certainly take a train from Limoges to Gramat. Limoges is accessed from the Loire by train certainly. Perhaps from Tours.
Now where is that nice detailed railway map of west central France ?
Good luck with your plans.
Rocamadour is in the middle of nowhere, some 456km (358 miles) from Paris. it would take all day to get there!
The nearest railway station is at Le Buisson, some 15km (9 miles) away. There are no buses to Rocamadour, in fact the station at le Buisson is a fairly dismal place!
The journey by train will be far from easy no matter where you start from.
Sorry - clear error in my previous post. GRAMAT is the nearest station of course, don't know what came over me!
It's about 6 miles. I have never found bus information on the web for this part of the world. It's a very remote area and if there are buses they will be once or twice a day at best.
Times for local trains at Gramat can be found at
Times for long distance trains connecting at either Toulouse or Brive-la-Gaillarde at [original link]
Sorry for previous error and I hope that helps.
When I go to the raileurope site and put in Paris (for example) to Rocamadour, the end station comes up as 'Rocamadour-Padirac'. Is Padirac any closer than Gramat? I don't mind taking a taxi the rest of the way, if it's not over 50 euros! And if there is reliable taxi service! I read about Rocamadour in National Geographic Traveler, and I am interested in photographing the place, as a good representation of pastoral France.
Of course, this is the fun of planning a journey. Always ask several people and maybe one will come up with the correct answer !!!
I have been to Rocamadour by car and would love to return and spend longer in these parts. I looked at the apparently official web site for Rocamadour :
[original link] to remind me about the place. I also looked at the 'acces' page where it says "Par le train :Gare SNCF à Gramat : 05.65.38.71.27 "
Now I think that perhaps the nice person running the Rocamadour website needs to be asked more about this ! Maybe the station at Rocamadour is new and nobody has told them about it ?
Hope you find somebody who has actually used the train and can tell you about the journey.
In comparison, does anyone know if Sant-Cirq-Lapopie is more worthy of a visit over Rocamadour? I am interested in great photo-ops and I may only have the 2 days in this region to do this. Also, I will be there in early April 2009. Decent weather for both cities? Temperature?
Indeed the station Rocamadour-Padirac is only about 4km from Rocamadour, but in a fairly isolated area, which is probably why the websites suggest going via Gramat. But maybe a 4km walk on a nice day wouldn't be so bad.
cubsur, do you know if there is a taxi service from that train station to the town proper? I was googling and found a taxi service but wasn't sure if they did the train statin-Rocamadour run or if they were merely for 'medical services' (??). Thanks for the input, everyone! :)
pedro - don't tell me you found an airport at Rocamadour ;-)
