I will be traveling from Barcelona to Geneva this August 10th. I would like to drive by some lavender fields on the way. Any suggested routes or stops.
Would like to spend a week in Rhône-Alpes.
1. What would be the best time of the year to go there?
2. Does it sound reasonable to stay the whole week in Lac du Bourget area as a base for day trips?
3. How is public transportation? Should I rent a car?
I would be grateful for any advice.
What is the deal with crossing borders and rental cars? If we take a scenic drive through the Alps we cross into Switzerland and drive a fair bit of the journey before crossing back into France via Chaminox to Passy. Do we have to have to advise the rental company ( hired in strasbourg) that we intend to cross a border country, are there tolls and road taxes to pay? We will be returning the car back to Avignon in France....confused?
We are traveling by car in February from Lyon to Geneva. We have all day to make the trip. Looking for ideas for places to stop on the way. we have all day and have already spent a few days in Megeve. Your suggestions appreciated.
Hello, I'm traveling to France soon and am interesting in knowing of the possibility of taking a one-day bike ride with a group, particularly a well-known climb like those in the Tour de France. I have done research and have only found 5-day to week-long group tours. It might seem like an outlandish request but I'd like to hear from a forum before scratching it off the wish list.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
We would like to spend a week in the Rhône-Alpes region during next spring or summer. We prefere staying the whole week in one single location, then maybe make two or three day trips from there during the week.
- Is it a good idea to book a hotel in Annecy as the base location? Would you suggest another town?
- What is the best time of the year for a vacation in that area?
On 10th august 2011 i did a great whitewater raft trip on the iserse river from bourg st maurice to franceraft base near centron approx 22km.We went through a lovely high sided canyon and jumped from the rocks.
Can anyone help to track down some pictures of this canyon.
My husband and I went over many of the Swiss ones a couple years back and some in the Pyrenees last fall (easier to do this when retired.)
We have 9 nights in late June. We want to stay 5-6 nights in one place. Which place? And we can't decide whether to start at the coast and come north, ending in Geneva. Or to start from Grenoble or Torino (which?) and do a loop focusing on the Vanois and/or Ecrins National Parks.
We would so appreciate any suggestions.

We will be staying in Geneva for 5 days in August. Can anyone suggest some scenic drives into France -- duration of a few hours up to an entire day. One evening, we will need to end up in Annecy for dinner. Also, we are cycling enthusiasts so any climbs/descents associated with the Tour de France would be fun to see. Thanks so much!
We are planning a trip to the area on one week.
We will land in Lyon on a Wednesday.
I need help planning the route.
I am looking to:
1) Stay in one or two places and do short day trips which the elder can cope with (her sister still rides in a backpack)
2) We mainly want a hiking and lakes vacation
3) I would prefer to stay somewhere where I can cook though the dates are problematic as we arrive and leave on a Wednesday rather than a Saturday.
I thought of basing my self in the Vercors natural reserve - Is there any bathing beach in the vicinity ?
Do you have rec. for day trips ?
Do you suggest I stay somewhere else ?
Our family of 2 adults and 2 teens wants to stay somewhere between Geneva and Evian for a few days next August. We had originally planned to stay in a Gite for a week, but are wondering if we should instead stay at a hotel in Geneva for a couple of nights, then a hotel somewhere along the lake for 2 or 3 nights, and then somewhere near Chamonix for a couple of nights. My questions are:
- Can anyone tell me what it is like to stay in a Gite? Are the hosts usually friendly, but let us alone? What should we expect?
- Given that we are there during high tourist season, are we better off staying in one place? I'm worried about spending all our time sitting in traffic, rather than actually getting to visit the mountains or beach.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. We ordinarily avoid travel during this time of year, but the airline was offering such a great deal on frequent flier tickets we couldn't pass it up!
When I fly out of Genoble on the 31st of January I'm going to have to get an earlier flight than my friends (my dad's getting married in Edinburgh the same day!) I'd love some advice on the cheapest way for one person to get from Val D'isere to Grenoble for a 10.00am flight... All the transfers look very expensive.
I will spend 6 days at the Rhone-Alpes region in mid-Sept. Here is my itinerary, pls give me some advice:
20/9 Paris --> Annecy (by train)
21/9 Annecy --> Charmonix (by car)
22/9 Charmonix --> Yvoire --> Evian-les-bains (by car)
24/9 Evian-les-bains --> Lausanne --> Evian-les-bains (by boat)
25/9 Evian-les-bains --> Paris (by train?)
1. I want to know whether it is worth to go Charmonix in mid-Sept coz it seems that there is not much to see at Autumn.
2. Can I go to Evain-les-bains and Yvoire by train?
Hello - Does anyone have any suggestions of hotels or B&Bs to stay at in Lyon? We are looking for a room with shower/bath & toilet at a rate of between 40-60E.

We are planning a week in the area of Lake Annecy 2nd week of September. Can anyone give suggestions of places/villages to stay around the lake? We will be driving so will obviously have use of a car to get around, but would love to stay somewhere with walking distance of a restaurant or two if we dont want to drive one night. Some of the campsites look appealing (chalet rental) but also there are some apartments that look ok too, but want somewhere suitable for late summer rental rather than geared up solely for skiers later in the season. Any suggestions and opinions would be welcome.
PS We dont have children so dont need to worry about facilities as such.
I want to park a car for 46 days can anyone suggest a secure, reliable and
inexpensive option.Any suggestions will be welcome.
I'll arrive in Grenoble in the 17.8 and will stay there until the 21.8 when I'm going to trek in the Vanoise and Les Ecrinse national parks.
I searched the net for cheap hotels/motels in Grenoble where i will be able to spend those 4 nights but didn't find something cheap enough (the cheapest place was around 60 Euro per night).
Can you please help me by suggesting some cheap places to stay in?
Thank you very much in advance,
We are off to Le Grand Bornand in the French Alps in August.
Anyone with advice and tips on what to do and visit and where to take the kids in summer in the surrounding areas?
We will be driving from London to France - any advice here?
We will visit Lyon for a few days-love it there!-then we leave for Italy around Oct. 15. I think visiting Provence then Monaco sounds interesting. Any suggestions regarding sightseeing in Italy on the road to Perugia where we are due to arrive around the 20th. Thanks for any input!
Bonjour! I was recently very lucky to win a grand prize trip to France. I am taking my mother, who has always wanted to go there. We are planning to spend a couple of days in Lyon and then would like to travel in the Beaujolais region (after all, my prize was from Georges Dubeauf!), perhaps staying overnight in a small village or winery. I am having trouble finding information about travel to this part of France so I would love any advice on villages or wineries to visit. I would really like to avoid having to rent a car because driving in a foreign country makes me very nervous! If anyone has heard of any guided tours or any alternatives to driving, I would greatly appreciate it. Merci!
I recently spotted a small home for sale in St. Didier Sur Rochefort online. I have been researching the languedoc area of France for a vacation home. I love the look of the home and the price is doable but I was unable to dig up much info on the ammenities of the immediate area of the village. Can anyone help me out? Thanks
Any ideas for towns or villages to stay in on an alpine tour of Italy, France & Switzerland?
My 18 year old daughter is planing a trip to the Alps in July 2007.
She will be using public transport, and will have a limited budget.
Looking for towns or villages with good transport links,
plenty of inexpensive accommodation,
waymarked hiking trails,
chairlifts/gondolas to high level (perhaps some snow)
any ideas for locations to stay in welcomed.
Does anyone know of public transportation (train, coach) or taxi van service for a day trip from Annecy to Bourget-du-Lac, for a group of 4 to 7 persons? Renting a car is not an option. I tried Adequat Transports in Annecy but they won't do it. Thanks.
Hi, I am thinking about visiting friends in Geneva before heading down to meet more friends in the small ski village of La Tania, near Moutiers, in the Rhone Alps. Does anyone know the easiest/quickest/cheapest way to do this journey?
Does anyone know how I can commute from Grenoble to Morzine - ideally by train but will consider bus.
Can't find any info on Google - perhaps I'm missing something!
hello, we are a canadian couple, going to be in southeast england (kent) for a week btw christmas and new year. we'd like to take advantage of the chance to ski somewhere in europe but we are not sure how to go about this. we have probably one night to travel and stay over, then ski that day and return to england. is this do-able? which resort is the closest to the UK and would be our best, most accessible and yet still amazing skiing? any suggestions would be very welcome. we are assuming it is best to stick to france bc of proximity but if there is driect and easy access to austria or anywhere else, we are open to it!
Hi, I will be staying in Villard de Lans for a week in September and I am planning a few excursions. Can anyone recommend a day trip (up to 350km) to see a glacier from or near the roadside. I am disabled and will not be able to hike or walk far from the vehicle but would like to see and photograph a glacier if possible. In fact, any recommended routes east of Grenoble for alpine scenery would be appreciated.
Thank you, Vince
Hi all...I have visited Annecy, but am curious as to whether anyone can tell me more about Chambery?
