Backpacking Azores  (1 Answer)

Hello all!

Me and a friend of my plan to visit the island pretty soon (backpacking / hiking trip).

-Can someone recommend a simple place to stay in after the flight near the airport/Lajes?
-Is there a tourist information office in Praia? Are there maps of Azores in English?
-What are the prices like for basic foods, such as bottled water, bread, canned food?
- Any general tips?

Thanks in advance,
Simon

car or bus?  (13 Answers)

Is it true that there is no any public transport on Azores? My friend advises me no to go unless I can hire a car. Unfortunately I haven't got even a driving licence. What shall I do? I was thinking to fly to Ponta Delgada and take some trips by bus. Mainly I would like to hike. I would be grateful for your tips.

Anyone know anything about the Azores, in particular Terceira?Any personal reminiscences?  (3 Answers)

I'll post this in the AQzopres forum too, but I thought you lot might be interested.
My Dad was posted to the Azores in WW11, as part of the secret 'Operation Alacrity', in his role in the 'I Corps', the Intelligence Corps.
My sister and I have always wanted to go there, in his memory. Before he joined up he'd been living ion Brazil for 21 years, so his Portuguese ensured he was part of this operation.
He'd been trained at an Army camp in Yorkshire, at Wentworth, where he'd met Mum at one of the dances. They got engaged then he was posted to the Azores!
My niece has decided to treat my sister to the air fare for her 60th birthday- which was the day before my 63rd and the plan is that we'll go together.
So- I've been researching how to get there and where to stay.
It IS a LONG way!My niece and I, between us have found very reasonable fares, for late April or mid May. I've found a lovely hotel, also very reasonably priced, on the island of Terceira, where Dad lived, for 3 years. It's on the beach at Praia da Vitoria. He was based at the joint US and English Army camp at Lajes Field.
I just wish I'd listened to Dad when he tried to teach me Portuguese, when I was a kid! It's a beautiful language.
I've just had a fabulous day trip to Calais, with fellow VTers( and packed so much in, we felt we'd been away for a week!) and I'm going to Lille with sis on the 18th December, for the Christmas markets---so--it's busy, busy, busy!
My head is spinning with arrangements!

Ferries in the Triangulo in January

Hi,

i am trying to find out the timetable for the Transmaçor ferries in January. On their website transmacor.pt they have posted their winter timetable, which always used to be valid from October to May, but this year it says explicitly that it is only valid until 31 December 09. I need to know the times in January too though to plan my itinerary! I have emailed them but have received no answer, and any Google search i tried failed to deliver. Does anybody know how i could obtain the information. I would be most grateful for any advice!

Muito obrigado
Matthias

Island hopping

I'm planning a 2nd trip to the Azores in summer with 4 walking friends, to see some the islands we 'missed' two years ago:
* Sao Miguel and Flores,
* Maybe Corvo or Graciosa or Santa Maria
* And again: Pico en Sao Jorge (which we liked very much).
About Pico and Sao Jorge I have quite enough information. Of the other islands I would like to know:
* are there camping’s? I couldn't find a list on the internet.
* If not, do you have some tips about nice B&B's?
* I've heard the flights of SATA between the islands in summertime have to be booked early - how early?
* Is there any information on boat schedules on the internet?
* What is the best tour, starting in Sao Miguel or finishing?
Thank you for helping us to plan a next unforgettable trip!
Angela

Few hours in Ponta Delgada

We will be in Ponta Delgada on a 4 hour plane lay-over this Saturday. Can anyone tell me how far it is from the airport into the center of town, and is there a nice (not expensive) restaurant you can recommend. Any sights you can recommend, besides walking around to soak up the local feel?

Are taxis metered and how much should a trip airport/town center cost?

Any other places we can see in that amount of time?

Thank you for any comments.

Accomodation and diving club in Horta  (2 Answers)

Hello travellers and kind hosts,
I am a young marine biologist from Croatia. I am planning to visit Azores in May and stay 6 months for a training. As a certified scuba diver, I would love to dive as much as possible...but, it would cost me a lot in a diving center for this period of time. So, I am wondering if anybody could help me...is there a diving club (sport club where I could become a member) in Horta? Could you tell me the approximate price for the accomodation/monthly in a normal appartment?Or, what would be a price for renting an appartent of approximately 50 quadrats?

Thank you in advance

Martina

Vacation on Sao Miguel, no car.  (6 Answers)

Hello! My wife and myself are planning a restful 12-day vacation in the Azores in June, and the Hotel Caloura in Sao Miguel seems to offer the perfect setting. However, we also want to move around a bit, and look forward to seeing as much of the beautiful sights of Sao Miguel and the Azores as we can. The problem is we don't drive, so car hiring is out. I know (and have read in previous posts) that the Caloura is a bit out of the way. I also read previous posts about the apparently absolute necessity of hiring a car. We can of course take a couple of organized sightseeing tours, but we also like to wander around by ourselves. We are fit enough to walk some distances, but of course that would not do if your target is a tens of kilometres away. So the question is, how do you move about? Is there and adequate public transport system? How much would, for instance, a taxi ride cost if one wanted to spend the evening in Ponte Delgado and return? Also: are there day visits to some of the other islands, Pico, for instance?
Advice would be very much appreciated. Or shall we call this vacation off? (The question is not serious, of course.)

What to do in a few hours?  (2 Answers)

We will be arriving on a trans-Atantic cruiz in April. How much will we be able to do in a few hours? Do the ships have tours? If so, do you think it is best to go on their tour or to go by ourselves?

Thanks

Winter boat links  (1 Answer)

Hi,

i visited the Azores last winter over New Year's and LOVED the islands i saw (S. Miguel, Faial and Pico). Now i want to return again in the same period (27 December-7 January) to see more of the islands. My plan is to fly to Flores and do the Corvo daytrip from there, but the flight schedules in the winter seem to be very limited. I read that the boat link there can be dodgy due to winter seas, so i wondered if anybody has experience of travel there during this time of the year.

Also, i would like to see S. Jorge. We'd be flying to Horta from Flores, so we could take the boat to Pico like we did last year, but is there also a boat link from Pico to S. Jorge in the winter? Information on this seems to be hard to find on the internet.

Any help is much appreciated. Muito obrigado and happy traveling!

Ferry between Faial & Pico ?  (3 Answers)

Does anyone know of the name of the ferry that runs between these islands?
We're trying to plan a trip next year, the only cost not covered in the pamphlet we got from an agent was the cost between the islands. Also how scary are the waters between the islands in November, which is when we were planning on going?

Thanks in advance :)

travelling to açores  (2 Answers)

Hey,

Me and 3 more decided we can't pass this year without going to Açores, it was actually my first New years resolution!!! :)
It's still quite opne, the trip, so i would like to know some things, so we can start thinking about it a bit better...
We area thinking about going in July, is that a good time to go? I know the weather is always a bit unpredictable, but what would be the best time to go... we would like to see some whales... i don't now if that's predicatble...

We're also still deciding about how long we are staying... We are going to S. Miguel, cause we have a friend there, but i would like to check out one or other island? What do you reckon? Does it take very long to go by boat? By plane must be expensive... which islands do you recommend, besides S.Miguel?

Txs in advance!...
