We would like to make a trip to Pulau Sipadan in June 2010. There are about 8-10 of us in the group. I would like to find out:
1) what is the latest cost to stay at Uncle Chang's in Mabul Island?
2) How much does he charge to take us out snorkelling?
3) What about renting of snorkelling equipment?
4) Will we have a chance to snorkel in Pulau Sipadan?
Tx for any replies!
The accomodation of Uncle Chang is very basic. You'll be staying on one of these houses on stilts, without A/C:
Should be ok, and it should be cool enough to sleep at night. I didn't stay there (preferred staying in Semporna and doing daytrips by boat, see my travelogue at molon.de/travelogues/Malaysi... ), but what I heard is that the accomodation is very cheap, below RM 100/night. Was advertised at RM50/night, but should be more expensive now.
Not sure how much Uncle Chang is charging, but from Semporna you can do daytrips by boat for RM100. This includes the boat trip, the snorkelling equipment and a simple meal (see my travelogue). Might be cheaper in Mabul, because the distance to the islands is smaller. By the way, snorkelling in Mabul itself is not good, because the water around Mabul is dirty and there is a strong current on the southern side of the island, like a fast river.
I don't know about Uncle chang exactly but if you want informations on other budget place on Mabul I can help you as I m staying in Mabul...
Most of the places charge snorkelers 20 ryngit for the rental equipment. You can found room with food for 70 RM. The best palce to snorkel around Mabul is Paradise 2 and you don't have to rent a boat to get there...
For Sipadan, everyone as the same price: 500 ryngit per person.
I hope that help you to plane your trip...
Let me know if you want further details.
