Amsterdam Travel Ticket (ATT)  (6 Answers)

Two questions:
(1) I will be using a 3-day ATT (€25). On one of those days, I will be traveling to Alkmaar for the morning (Friday cheese market) by train from my Schiphol airport hotel (I will be touring Amsterdam in the afternoon and evening). The route to Alkmaar requires me to change trains at Sloterdijk. The trip from Schiphol to Sloterdijk is covered by the ATT, so I presume I just have to pay for the journey from Sloterdijk to Alkmaar. Technically, how do I do this? Do I go to the ticket window at Schiphol - explaining the situation, of course - and buy a ticket Sloterdijk -> Alkmaar?
(2) From reading both the ATT and GVB sites, I understand that, with the ATT, I have to 'check-in' at the beginning of each journey and 'check-out' at its end. This system is quite different from those in other European cities I have been to. I imagine this is similar to a 'ticket validation' process - at both ends. OK. This I can understand for trains and metros with their mass transit 'gates' at the entrance/exit of a station. But what happens with trams and buses? Do I also have to go through check-in and check-out and, if so, how is it technically done?

Electric and electronic convertors...  (5 Answers)

I am wondering about what I need for adaptors or convertors for my camera battery, my laptop, my curling iron, my blow dryer and possibly my cell phone. The guy at Source didn't really convince me that he knew what he was talking about! I had a convertor last time that I used for my curling iron, but my blow dryer for my hair had a strange sound when I used that one. Last time I didn't have a laptop or a digital camera. Also the gal at Sasktel didn't know if I would be able to text from Holland to Canada. We leave home on Tuseday en route to Holland, the land where almost my entire extended family call home. I am looking forward to my 4th visit!!

Where to stay?  (2 Answers)

I will be flying into Weeze on 28 January-2 February 09 and I am aware that the town of Weeze is quite small so we do not wish to stay there. However, we would like to stay in a larger town that is convienient for visiting attractions in the local area. We do not care if this is in nearby Holland or further into Germany. It would be more suitable if the travel time is no longer than 50/60 minutes by train!

Thanks in advance.

Addiction clinics  (2 Answers)

Hi all. Myself and some fellow social work students are coming to Holland for a few days with the intention of visiting substance (alcohol and drugs) addiction clinics, to see how they compare with our services in the UK. Our tutor has so far had no luck in finding us any contacts in Holland so that we can arrange some visits. Do any of you guys have names and contacts for clinics that may be willing to allow a few students to come and see how things are done in the 'best welfare state in Europe'? Any info would be great.

Day Trips from Amsterdam to the countryside: Oct 6th-11th  (4 Answers)

Hello all,

I'm doing the Europe thing from New Zealand later this year, and will be in Holland around these dates for a few days. I'm quite keen on sampling the Amsterdam lifestyle, the bikes, the tour-by-water, the parks ...the SMOKE... But I would also like to see some *Holland*.

Can anyone please recommend for me an excursion(s) that may take a day or so in the area around the city? The countryside and the windmills? My partner's family are Dutch, and although I'll be travelling alone, I fear it wouldn't do his family justice if I didn't have a proper look around the place.

My main motivators for travelling and this trip are culture, people, arts and history & the marvels of dutch design. Any advice will be hugely appreciated.

EU citizen - first time abroad, airport and other questions  (1 Answer)

Hello all :)

First of all, I'm glad to be here, since this was the first site that I found when I first started to look for information on Amsterdam. I have become wiser after reading a lot of stuff here, and congratulations to everybody for making this community such a great place to be :)

I'm going to be in Amsterdam for six days/five nights on late July-early August, and since this is my first time abroad, I'm still a bit troubled as to whether I need a passport to travel from Greece to Netherlands or not. Is it true that I only need my ID for direct flights between EU nations ? Is there any other paperwork that I need to be aware of/bring along in the airport ?

On another note, I was thinking of visiting some stores that sell stuff like clothes, bags, oil, soaps etc. made from hemp. We use the term 'kannabishops' for places like that here in Greece. What I'd really like to know is whether I would be able to carry a gift purchased from such a store in the airport with me or it would be illegal ? Do you know of any good stores like that in Amsterdam ?

Also, I'm thinking about lowering the amount of cash that I will be carrying on a daily basis with me to the absolute minimum. For this I will probably use the I Amsterdam card and my VISA, so I was wondering about ATM's that allow money withdrawal from VISA cards - are there enough ? What about Maestro cards ?

Finally, the annual Amsterdam Arena Tournament is being held on the time period that I will be in Amsterdam. Since I'm an Ajax supporter, I would like to see the team playing and of course the stadium. Do you think it would be easy for me to find a ticket for the tournament on those days or I should book in advance ? Is there a way to book online ?

Please accept my apologies for the length of my post. I understand that some of my questions are probably kind of silly, but as I said this is my first time abroad and I think it's probably natural for first-timers to have silly questions :)

Thanks for your time,

Winter in Holland  (4 Answers)

hi!! my name is james hillman and i am a high school student in Newcastle, Australia (about 2 hours north of sydney). I am possibly heading to Holland in November for 3 months on an exchange program. The reason i am going to Holland is because it has a very different culture to Australia, but many people speak english. Am i right? I think it would be a really interesting and amazing country to live in for 3 months. What do you think?

Also, i was wondering if you guys could answer a few questions of mine? Well, here they are. Is it normal for people from holland to travel? or do you like staying in your own country? Would it cost much to travel to say London or surrounding countries? What about denmark. is that close tyo Holland. How long are the christmas holidays in Holland? Can you tell me a bit about the christmas celebrations in Holland? What do you do? When is it? What about new years eve? Is that celebrated a lot? Will it still be an awesome experience in winter? Will i get a white christmas? what about school? Is school from monday to friday? what times usually? what subjects are taught? what are the people like in Holland. What kind of things happen in winter? Is it pretty dead on the streets? Can you please just tell me lots about winter life in Holland. What sports are played? Celebrations in winter? Snow? is it true that most people from Holland dont use the drugs? what about the young people? teenagers? it would be so awesome if you could answer these questions for me whenever you can. i am so inquisitive about your country and your culture. i think it will be an amazing place to live in for 3 months. i am really excited. cant wait to hear from you in the near future hopefully.

James Hillman, Australia

Group accommodation  (3 Answers)

Hello "Holland", I represent a group of friends (from various countries, but all with a young spirit) that held a 'big' annual meeting. We just had our 2004 meeting in Galveston Texas and are planning to have our 2005 meeting in the Netherlands. Some time between Aug 2005 and Oct 2005 we will held our 2005 meeting and we are wondering if there is any group accommodation in a central place in Holland (Amsterdam area seems ok for us, but not the city itself). We will probably have a group of around 20 people and need a place to sleep for about 6 nights. Full catering is not neccesary. We also would like to use this place as a starting point for our excursions and to hang around, have a drink and do lots of socializing, talking and gezellig doen :-) The place could be a farm, boat, even some houses grouped together would be ok. But not a youth hostel, hotel or large park like for instance 'sporthuiscentrum' or 'grandorado'. We would like this accommodation to be in a local area, so not in a large city. Do you have any suggestions for such a place Thanks in advance PS: You may reply in Dutch since I read it perfectly !

Bicycling in Holland  (4 Answers)

Last summer I biked from my hometown to Kiel in Germany. This summer I will go further and intend to roll Holland, Belgium and France. My plan is to use my bicycle carrying my tent so I have to find camping grounds ( preferably small and quiet, perhaps “bij de boer” ). Should I take the Afsluitdijk ( too much wind and cities ? ) or a more eastward route ? If it is raining I could use the “StayOkay” alternatives or something else ?
