I will be visiting Pretoria in Jan 2012 flying in through Joburg int'/ airport
1. Plan to take Gautrain metro airport to Marboro then switch to the Marlboro station towards Hatfield. Read somewhere on the loney planet that the Metro Joburg-Pretoria is not safe
Is this true?
2. What's a good alternative to the metro?
3. Please recommend a inexpensive but safe & clean place to stay near/walking distance to the Hatfield campus of University of Pretoria
The Lonely Planet guide that you're using seems to be outdated and misinformed.
The Gautrain (not Metro) rapid rail transit link has been operating between OR Tambo (formerly known as Johannesburg International) airport and Hatfield since July and there has not been a single security incident. One one correct detail is that you take the train from ORT to Marlboro and change trains (you stay on the same platform) - the whole journey takes less than an hour.
Follow this link to my transport pages on Pretoria which will give you much more information: [original VT link]
Just bear in mind that the service shuts down fairly early (20:30) and that it operates on a smart card system which you need to buy and then load money onto - all of this is explained in the pages above.
I also have compiled a 'users guide to OR Tambo' as a travelogue on my Johannesburg page which may be of use to you. Follow this link: [original VT link]
Accommodation really depends on how long you're planning to stay and what level of comfort and service you require. Longstay? Just a couple of nights? Self catering? B&B? Full board?
Thank you, your info is very helpful
I plan to visit in Jan 2012 and stay for around 10 day.
Am not particular about food/creature comfort ... just a clean and safe place to stay.

Take your pick!
Glad to be of assistance.
