We arrive in Athens on March 22nd and are taking a ferry to Santorini the next day. We thought that it would be more convenient to stay in Piraeus that night. We will be staying in Athens 5 nights on our return. Any and all suggestions greatly appreciated.
Well, Piraeus is a port town, and may not be to your liking. The night we spent there was wet and the roads, including dead dog on the footpath, were not somewhere we felt really safe, nor did we find it a great experience...but, the hotel we stayed at was cheap, great service, and pretty good for a one night stop before catching a ferry at 07:25...and we could spy out the route to the ferry before having to take it. Staying in Athens might be better, but then you have to find your way on the day...not always a welcome thought when you are trundling the luggage, and its possibly raining, and maybe the metro is late / broken / on strike....We did stay in Athens later, and on a fine day, with plenty of time Piraeus might be ok. If you are set on Piraeus, try ionionhotel.com/index.htm...... seems not to be mentioned in TripAdvisor, but we found it quite adequate for overnight...clean room, clean bathroom, helpful staff, breakfast included (no problem with 06:00 departure), and Traci di Regula at About Greece rated it well. Cash only. English spoke, very helpful people...just Greek I guess !
