Visiting the Castles of the Loire Valley  (5 Answers)

I'm strongly considering adding the Loire Valley to my list of destinations in France next month. I have two major questions:

1. Would Orleans be the most central place to stay to visit the bulk of them?

2. Can you recommend any formal castle tour companies or individuals, with whom you have PERSONALLY had a good experience? I'd be interested in either single day or multiple day tours.

Merci,

Robert

Trying to decide between Amboise and Saumur as our base in the Loire.  (9 Answers)

Hi folks!
We are making plans for a spring trip to visit the Dordogne and the Loire Valley. We've got our first two weeks covered in the Dordogne region, but are trying to decide which place to stay in the Loire - Amboise to the east or Saumur to the west. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Can anyone offer any help on this one?

We want to stay someplace where we can walk to dinner and around town. We'll travel about during the days by car.

Thanks in advance!
Tom

Visiting Loire area in Nov, want to eat local, seasonal foods from markets and shops  (13 Answers)

My spouse and I will be in the Loire region mid-November, specifically Tours, Saumur, and Angers. We like to eat local specialties and food from the farmer's market and would love your recommendations for what to eat in November. We prefer to go to bakeries and specialty markets, rather than restaurants. We love street food. We don't have any way to cook, so the food would have to be prepared or easy to prepare without cooking. We especially enjoy regional oils and most importantly, cheese. Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Walking in the Loire Valley  (3 Answers)

Mature, very fit ladies spending a week somewhere in the Loire Valley early April 2012, after several days of sightseeing, checking out some of the castles etc. would like to find some interesting walks - approx 15kms anywhere in the area (not mountain climbing) by using public transport.
Thanks

Recommendations for nice stop over hotel/b&b?

Hi there,

we are travelling back from the Dordogne to Roscoff and we could like somewhere to stop over about half way as we are travelling with our 10 month old baby.

I know there are plenty of hotels about, but we were looking for something a little special, a hidden gem maybe? And thought you lovely people may have some suggestions?

We don't mind going a little out of our way either, I was looking at the areas around Nantes, Angers, La Roch Sur Yon etc etc but not in built up town somewhere quiet, with a restaurant too.

Hope you can help!
Leah

2 Days in Angers in July  (3 Answers)

Hi

I have decided to stay in Angers for 2days in July and use it for a base for exploring the Loire Valley. I will be driving to Angers from Paris and Intend to stop over in Saumur on the way.

I would like to know what is the most scenic route to drive from Saumur to Angers?

I would also like to know if there is enough to see in Angers to occupy me and my family for 2 days and if so what are the main sights and what are the best things to do etc. Obviously we intend to visit the chateaux and tapestry etc.

Tours from Tours  (1 Answer)

I've researched the website for Tours and have seen that there are 4+ companies doing tours of some of the Loire chateaux. Is there any preference? I'm thinking they must all be about the same, yes? I want a morning visit to both Azay Le Rideau and Villandry, and there seems to be at least 3 companies listed that will do those castles, but which one is better or do they all use the same minivan just that the payment goes to a particular company? I was hoping to select the company that would most likely be up for visiting one other castle before we head back to the tourist office, if we cut our visit to Azay and Villandry short...is that even possible? So many choices, and so few reviews available on these companies!

Chateau du Moulin  (11 Answers)

While we are in the Loire valley, we'll be visiting Chambord, Chenonceau, Tours, Azay Le Rideau. All by public transport. And then, I saw a photo of the Chateau Du Moulin and wondered how one would visit this place by public transport (if possible?). Anybody been there and can assist? Thanks!

Luggage lockers here? Scaffolding? Chenonceau & Azay le Rideau  (1 Answer)

We finalized our itinerary in April! (so far...) We are staying 1 night at the St Michel hotel at Chambord. After touring the castle in the morning, we will take a train via St Pierre Corps to Chenonceau to visit that Chateau. Anybody know if there are luggage lockers at the train station? After a nice late afternoon at Chenonceaux, we will take the train to Tours for 1 night. The next morning, we'd like to take an early morning train or bus to Azay le Rideau for a quick visit before hopping the train to our next destination (Chartres). Are there luggage lockers at Tours train station? Last question: anybody know if any of the above-listed Chateaux are covered in scaffolding or other renovations going on? Trying to take a decent photo of the exterior...

Need advice about the wisdom of a late March visit  (1 Answer)

I will be in Paris later in March, and I want to extend the trip to visit Bourges and Chartres (by train). I've discovered I could easily visit at least part of the Loire Valley (by car) en route from Bourges to Chartres, but I have to wonder if this is a crazy idea. I don't expect anyone to predict the weather, but is the area (roughly from Tours to Orleans) likely to be at all rewarding at this time of the year? Perhaps there will be a very early spring :-), but assuming there is not, I would appreciate any thoughts on my sanity. I should confess that while I would want to visit a major chateau or two, this would not be my primary interest--landscape, villages, churches are my things. I'm sure there are better times to visit, but I'm working with the opportunity I have.

Which Chateau would you suggest?  (11 Answers)

We're whizzing through from Tours to Orleans, there's some amazing chateau on that route - Chenoncaux, Blois, Chambord, Amboise and more. We've limited time before heading into Paris, but can do a drive past of three, ducking into Amboise town and for an inside tour of one chateau.
Which one do we tour and which one's do we do a quick stop and photo of? We love our history so Amboise is fascinating, but inside it seems a little bare.

Chateaux along the rails...  (7 Answers)

I have been doing some research of the Loire Valley chateaux. I want to know if any of these Chateaux are within a 15min walking distance from any train station: Azay, Chenonceaux, Chaumont, Villandry, or Langeais? I don't want to do a minibus tour, and I don't have a car (I'm on foot). Thanks!

Cycling and baggage transport  (2 Answers)

We are planning to travel to Loire area for a cycling tour. We have found packages including bike rental, accomodation and baggage transport.

However, we would like to organize our own tour, so we would like to hire a bike, and arrange baggage transport and accomodation according to our itinerary.

Does anybody know if it is possible to arrange baggage transport service withoug getting a package? Any idea about the price?

Would it be possible to arrange it once we are there or should we book in advance? How about accomodation in August? Is it difficult to find reasonable places to stay (B&B or similar) without booking in advance?

Thank you very much.

I was wondering if anyone knows of any boat cruises on the Loire River? I saw something mentioned somewhere that there may be boat tour operators at various towns, but I haven't been able to find any further information.

Visting the castles for a weekend  (6 Answers)

Hi,

I and my friend will be in Paris on a Friday evening.
we want to spend the weekend visiting the castles in the valley.
We have the return flight out of Paris (CDG) on Sunday late evening.

Which city (in the valley)should we stay - whichever is closer to the castles and accessible by public transport. Alternatively if we can find tours to these castles from the local city,it will be easier.

Thanks in adavnce

If you could only pick 3 chateau...  (4 Answers)

I'm traveling with my family for 2 weeks to France in early August. We'll be spending 2+ days in the Loire area, and I'm trying to narrow down my sightseeing choices. We'll be staying in Tours, and will see the cathedral there. If you had to pick 3-4 chateau to visit, which are your "don't miss"? I've pretty much decided on Chenonceau, but what other advice do you have for me?

Visiting Les Chateaux!  (3 Answers)

My sister and I will be in Tours in April 2009. I have been searching the Web for tour companies that would do these specific Chateaux: Azay le Rideau, Chaumont, and Chenonceau. The minibus tour that I found on the Tours website will visit only a couple of the Chateaux, but not all of them. I have only 1 day to to a 'complete' tour of these 3 chateaux. Can anyone suggest another tour company that would include all 3 chateaux, possibly more? We don't drive (car) but we can probably handle a bicylcle or scooter if they are available in Tours? I'd much prefer a small group or private tour, though.

Cities to go how long to stay in august  (2 Answers)

Hello,

I'd like to go to the Pays de la Loire with my girlfriend.
Do you know if late August (ex. 18-23 august) is too crowded, or if it is bearable?
Do you know the best towns to stay and the best places to visit?
We're thinking of staying there for 4 days and after spend 2 days in Mont St Michel. Do you think it's too much, too little or just fine?
Thanks,

Relaxing holiday  (5 Answers)

Hi,

I have been looking at places to stay in Pays de la Loire for a week with my boyfriend.

I am looking to stay in a gite or a campsite but would like to be relatively near a lakeside beach, or somewhere to relax by water.

The main purpose of our holiday is to take in the sites, go to local markets and sample the local wine and cusine.

I am on a tight budget so I appreciate any advice I can get really.

Many thanks :-)

Honeymoon in loire  (7 Answers)

Hi there,

we are planning to drive to Loire from eurostar for a 5 days in April
Never been there before, so looking for some recommendations. We are looking at Chateaux and also at the opportunity to play a bit of golf and wine tasting. We found a place called les bordes with a golf course on site. Anybody been here. We are fairly new to golf an just want the opportunity to play once or twice, otherwise we would like to go wine tasting and other sight seeing.

Thanks

Renting a House in France  (3 Answers)

Hello,

We are looking to reat a house in France for 2 weeks in June of 2008. I'd appreciate some advice on the best places to look....thank you in advance.

1. There will be 6/6 adults and 5/7 children
2. We'd like somewhere rural but reasonably close to a village/town
3. Access to wonderful French food is important
4. A quiet golf course close by would be nice
5. Water whether it be a pool or river should be close at hand to cool down

Thank you again for any advice and all is welcomed.
