Papua New Guinea in February......

Hubby and I would like to book a cruise to Papua New Guinea to celebrate our wedding anniversary. But it is in February. Just interested to hear of others experiences travelling in PNG at that time of the year. Particularly in regard to rain and health issues. Any other suggestions for great places to cruise to at that time if the year. We have already done most of the Sth Pacific Islands. Thank you.

Cruising to PNG and risk of Malaria  (8 Answers)

My hubby and 3 children (ages 10, 7 and 5) are cruising to PNG next week. The cruise is for 10 days. 4 of these days will be spent visiting surrounding islands such as Alotau etc. These will be day trips only from around 9.00 - 4.00 when we have to jump back on the ship. I have a script here for all of us for malarone tablets. I have been doing some reading up on these and spoke to my Chemist yesterday. He suggested another pill called Doxycycline. My problem is that my kids can't take any anti nausea drugs just in case any of these medicines make them feel ill. What is the risk of us actually contracting this disease when we won't actually be frequenting land that much? As it stands, it looks like we may only visit one island as it is. I really don't want the kids feeling sick the whole trip due to the medication, and am tossing up whether we should just enjoy the cruise and not get off on any islands. Would wearing long sleeve shirts and pants and smothering ourselves in Bushmans etc suffice considering the length of time we are there??? Could someone give me some suggestions or scenarios of what they think is best. I have read that some people have moved there to live for a couple of years, and they have chosen not to take any anti malaria drugs. I'm in two minds of what to do...... HELP! We leave next Wednesday.....
Thanks
Monique

Must see and tribal people

In October, my friend and I, travel for four weeks in Papua New Guinea. We will in this regard, see what you think is at MUST SEE/DO.

We are interested in nature, animals, sports, hiking, diving / snokling, culture and beach.

Because we have no interest in the Australian history, we choose not to take on the Kokoda trip.

We'd love to go out and visit some original tribal people (also mudmen). Do you have suggestions for where it could be? And which company we should book at?

We also want to go out to the islands of New Ireland and New Britain. Would it be more advisable to select only one of the islands, in the case of the islands shall we choose?

Papua to Solomon is. by boat? + malaria precautions

Hi guys,

1) I am sorry for repeating this question once again as I did about one year ago. I am wondering if here is anyone with fresh experience:

I am still thinking about visiting Solomon Islands from Papua New Guinea. I am considering an alternative way of how to get to your country - traveling by boat / cargo freighter etc. I hear there is a boat link between southern Bougainville in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands (Shortlands). Do you think it is doable? It would be of great convenience since im planning to visit this island group anyway.

So, is there any chance to make it from Papua New Guinea to Solomon Islands by the sea? If so, what immigration procedures on your side would be in such a case?

2) I know, I know I should refer to official recommendation given by doctors or to health information websites, but i would like to know your practice and opinion. Do you take any chemoprophylaxes when in PNG and Solomon Islands? If so, are these drugs readily available for purchase in Port Moresby? The thing is drug stores in my country have commonly very poor selection of these medications...

Thank you for your reaction and information in advance...

jirikoo

Should a solo budget traveller worry about safety in PNG?  (5 Answers)

Hi there!
The security situation in PNG comes very controversial over various internet sources!
Many governement travel advice offices warn for terrible things to happen, while travellers report better situation.
iI anybody has a good idea about how things are going this period, I would be greatfull to know!
My plan is to travel solo and budget, so with public transport and stay at simple places, which might expose the backpacker to some more possible danger, instead of staying in top end hotels with security, private transport etc, which is not my case.
I'm thinking to enter overland from Indonesia and stay for about 10 days, then return to Indonesia or fly ex Port Moresby.
Many thanks guys
Nik

Wallet - friendly flight combinations for South Pacific islands?  (6 Answers)

Hi there!
I'm researching for flights ex SE Asia (else ex AUS/ NZ) in low budget terms, for a trip to south pacific islands, including, preferably PNG, perhaps Fiji etc.
The inter-island connections seem far too complicated and expensive.
I have not decided where exactly to go, but since this will be my fist trip to the area, it seems that itinerary should depend greatly on feasibility and cost, instead of hitting my head to the wall, trying to get to certain places.
My ideal (and flexible) plan would be to visit say 3 islands/ countries in about 3 weeks.
Obviously this time frame won't be enough for an in-depth exploration, but I really like to see diffrent places instead of going around or relaxing in one.
I guess that the islands can offer both natural scenery and a glimpse to local people life in each own distinctive way.
I'm definately not looking to just lie on the beach.
Any ideas, experiences, costs for a wallet- friendly flight combo, would be very very helpfull!
Many thanks guys for your time and expertise,
hoping it will be a long but beautiful way over there
Nik
