I will be in Florence with a gruop of 14 students. We need to travel to Todi for one day. I understand the best way to travel is by train first to Orvieto and then carry on to Todi. What is the best way to get to Todi? Abouyt how much are the tickets?
Look at the official Italian railway website in English:
It will give you departure times, details and fares. You do not have to work out the routing yourself: all European railway websites give the fastest routing by default.
Search for 'Firenze'. Journey time to Orvieto is from around 2h 13m. Unfortunately, I can find no service from Florence or from Orvieto to Todi Ponte Rio (the railway station which is linked with the settlement by bus).
Getting from Orvieto to Todi is not so simple. The bus service simply doesn't fit a daytrip (it is for workers):
and I have been unable to find a train service on Trenitlia or on the regional railway website (see below).
You would be better, imo, to go to Terni by train from Florence (a very early start, I'm afraid, and a longish train journey) and take the bus or train to Todi from there:
or ...probably the better option, because the train journey is no longer than to Orvieto....train to Perugia and then train or bus:
You'll need to research using the links to decide which routing provides you with the best departure/return times as well as length-of-Todi-exploration time.
Alternatively, with 14 of you it might be worth exploring the cost of hiring a private van + driver for the day. It would certainly be the easiest option, although nor necessarily the cheapest.
By train, you would go:
Firenze-Terontola-Perugia st. P. San Giovanni (Ferrovie dello Stato) , then
Ponte San Giovanni-Todi (Ferrovia Centrale Umbra)
Yeah, you have to switch rail companies Perugia. They may share the same station in Perugia...
The Ferrovia dello Stato website (usually called "Trenitalia" here) is www.trenitalia.com (look for English at the top). The Ferrovia Centrale Umbra schedule for Perugia to Todi can be found at umbriamobilita.it/public/res... (look at page 6). Can you read Italian train schedules? Like do you know the meaning of the symbols?
Anyway, plot out some sample solutions and see if they work for you...I see a few direct trains from Florence to Perugia S. Giovanni, but there are other solutions with a change in Terontola or wherever.
Note that it will take a while to just get to Perugia, then wait for the FCU train to Todi...how much time do you have for this?
Hmmmn, italybus.it doesn't report a direct bus from Florence to Todi...too bad...
"Alternatively, with 14 of you it might be worth exploring the cost of hiring a private van + driver for the day. It would certainly be the easiest option, although nor necessarily the cheapest."
Yeah, you should probably look into this, because it may take up to 3 1/2 to 4 hours to train to Todi, but only 2.5 hours to drive there...well, less for me but maybe a little longer for a bus ;-)...if you are time sensitive, think about it...
I was interested in this thread knowing the limited options and googled 'Florence hiring a vehicle with driver' in Italian to see lots of choices :
'firenze autonoleggio con conducente'
This is one with interesting pages although I am not recommended the firm :
Just out of interest I checked on the Comune di Todi website and they have a list of registered drivers but this is no use as it would entail two trips as you are returning to Florence :
I hope you find something to suit your requirements!
And... when you all arrive at Todi's train station, you will have to get a taxi/cab up to Todi - 3 km drive.
The usual thing: not the best public transport cross-regional (Toscana - Umbria)
I think there is a bus up to the town from Todi Ponte Rio station, Ingrid? Line C here:
