How to you travel from Orvieto to Lucca by train, do you have to pr book?
www.trenitalia.it is the website to check train timetables and connections. I had a look and you have mostly local trains and some intercities, as options. You can prebook intercities but, unless you are travelling on summer week ends or august, you don't need to in my opinion.
You will not need to pre-book.
We loved both Orvieto and Lucca. Lucca was by far one of our favorite cities in Italy.
By the way, Orvieto is also the jumping point (by bus across from the train station) to Civita de Bagnoregio.
You may want to check going there?
Orvieto was one of my top 3 spots on a May, 2013 tour of Italy. Unfortunately the trip from Orvieto to Lucca on Trenitalia is a bit of a long one from Orvieto. Depending on the day there is either one or two trains from Orvieto to Lucca. The quickest train is a little over 4 hours and involves transferring in Florence.
Sometimes with the trenitalia web site you will type in the name of a town and it will not give you an answer because of a different station name. If you experience that, just go to raileurope.com where you can type in the names of each city and get a response. Under no circumstances would I purchase from them because their rates are higher.
Homan's idea about Civita is fantastic. Civita is one of the most breathtaking towns in Italy. Definitelty worth the hour bus ride each way at a cost of 4 euros RT from Orvieto to see.
