University of Newcastle

I just got admitted to the University of Newcastle, commencing on February 2007, and I was wondering if i could get some information about the City itself. I have never been to Australia and i just wanna get as much information before i make my decision if I should take the offer or not. What is the city like?.. and is there lots of things to do during free time?? If i do decide to go.. I'll be living there for two years and just the thought of me going to a place where I've never been to..or for that matter.. a place where i dont know anyone is a bit overwhelming. Any advice will be surely appreciated!!! =)

Hi. Congratulations on your admission. We live at Nelson Bay which is about 3/4 hour away from Newcastle but my daughter goes to Newcastle uni and is in her final year. You will notice quite a few similarities between Australia and California and Newcastle is a good location as it's only about 2 1/2 hours from Sydney and it has an airport so that you can access other locations quite easily. Our daughter has mentioned in the past that there are a numbr of American students attending her uni, I'm wondering if you could contact one of them through the uni to get some feedback. Newcastle is a beach/harbour city but it also has the 'burbs, so you live wherever it suits you. My daughter goes to Newcastle to socialise; clubs, restaurants etc and I know she would prefer to live there rather than Nelson Bay because it has more for her age group. Doesn't matter where you go, it is inevitable that you are going to be homesick for a period of time but it will get better. Good luck with your decision.

Congratulations, Newcastle is a great place to live and Newcastle Uni has a lot of students from overseas.

Have a look at some of the members pages to get a feel for the place. Newcastle is a relaxed place as far as cities go, not at all frantic like Sydney, but still plenty of nightlife and activities to keep you occupied.

Frankly, the only bad decision you could make is not to come.
Feel free to contact myself and Rosemarie when you arrive and we'll have a cuppa somewhere.

I attended newcastle Uni and had a really good time. My advice would be to live on campas at least for your first semester. I lived at internationla house which has 50% international students. It was great and so easy to meet people and just makes the whole situtaion a lot easier. Any of the colleges are good though.

Good luck
