When traveling and hiking through Hawaii we typically wear running shorts and tank tops. What do you recommend we wear walking/ hiking through Naxos? I have hear we can leave the heavy boots at home. Do we need regular running shoes? Would we look like complete american tourists if I wore running shorts and a loose tank? I realize this is a girl question:) but if I own the stuff to blend in I would rather take it!
In Naxos you should wear whatever is comfortable. Its a very laid back island.
Take good hiking boots if you intend to do some serious hiking, and good walking shoes (runners will do)
Take also a smart/casual outfit for evenings out and dining

And don't forget a hat and sunscreen
I AGREE with Lynne's answer. However, take into consideration that if you travel to Greece in August or even September, it can be very, very hot. So, take clothes that are comfortable. As for shoes, I believe a good canvas walking/running shoe, either closed or open, is always suitable, year round in Greece. Unless, you are a mountain climber, then you should take what ever you would normally wear on any holiday, such as Hawaii.
People dress quiet the same in Greece, as we do in the States, except they do tend to wear lighter materials in the summer.
Where will you be staying in Naxos? I can recommend several great places I've stayed, but I would need to know your budget.
I have been to Naxos 12x, may, june, sept., have hiked inland a lot (short hikes, 3-5 miles) have never needed more than athletic shoes w. thick soles & good inserts. Short Shorts are fine for beaches & hiking ... but in Naxos Town afterwards, for shopping, dinner, clubs etc, would suggest Bermuda length shorts or cropped pants (knee) if you are out of high school... And unless its after September or before June, Jeans get too hot (tho some of the kids wear them, suffering for Style points) .. I do really light-weight slacks.
