Is there anywhere where we can see a Dhow being built? Thanks Roy
If I'm not mistaken, I think they can be found by the wharf in Muscat. I saw these skilled men (the very many of them originally from India and Pakistan) featured in the Globe Trekker show when the country of Oman was the destination highlight. Pretty fascinating stuff.
Go to Sur, which is about 2.5 hours drive from Muscat. Sur has what I think is that last traditional dhow yard in Oman, where they still make dhows by hand. They also make models there, by hand, which are for sale - they are beautiful. There's also a small maritime museum in Sur.
Also close to Muscat at a place called Qantab (maybe half an hour drive or so) there is a small boat yard on the far end of the beach where they have been making the scale model boats of all different styles and sizes for the new museum in Muscat. I'm not sure exactly how much work they are still doing there now because the museum is opening soon. I became friends with the head boat builder there, so if you want to send me a private message I can try to put you in touch with him - he is a lovely guy and always pleased to talk to visitors.

Great pointers camelicious!
You're both welcome :)
I'm love the boats in Oman, I could quite happily sail away there…!
Does anyone own a flat In Muscat they might want to rent out?
