Janadriyah Festival

I live in Khobar and attended the Janadriyah Festival several years back and would like to go again. In past years, it was held around February. If you have any information of the dates, please let me know. Also, do they still have the "family/ex-pat" day?? Again from past years, it used to be on the second Thursday of the festival in the morning. Any info would be appreciated. Thx.

Is there mountain biking around Riyadh?  (5 Answers)

Hi again.
I'm a hardcore mountain biker and I was wondering if I should bring my bike when I move to Riyadh. Are there good trails around Riyadh? Also, is there a riding club/organization. I searched on the web and couldn't find anything.

motorcycling and mountain biking in/around Riyadh  (9 Answers)

Hi all. I recently accepted an offer to work in Riyadh and I was thinking of sending my motorcycle there. Are there many of them in the city? Also, is it safe enough or just too crazy to even consider riding a motorcycle? I'm used to driving in traffic in big cities in the US (and even SE Asia), but is this much different?
Also, are there any tight winding roads close to Riyadh or is it all straight freeways? My bike is a Ducati Monster which isn't good for extended freeway riding.

Also, are there good places to ride a mountain bike close by Riyadh? Any good single track?

Relocation Advice  (5 Answers)

Dear All,

I currently in negotiations with a company regarding moving to Riyadh and looking for some advice on cost and locations. I'd appreciate it if any of you could shed any light on the followin so that I can make sure I go into the negotiation process well informed:-

1) I'm relocating my family which consists on myself my wife and three kids. Ideally we are looking for a 3Bed Villa in a compound environment could anyone recommend a nice compound, I have been recommended Al Hamra by the company but I have heard that they have dress codes such as no Abaya's and no niqabs. My Wife although a practicing muslim doesn't wear these however she does dress modestly and wears a head scarf..? would these be caught under the same dress code curfews..?

2) What sort of budget should I have in mind for a 3 Bed villa on a good compound?

3) I have heard that the British International School is of a reputable standard what annual fees do they charge..?

4) Any idea what the costs are for a Toyota Land Cruiser style car over there Rent/Buy

5) Does anyone have any information regarding healthcare / mediacal Insurance cover and how much it costs for a comprehensive policy..? Any links would be appreciated.

Cheers in advance for any information. Whish you all the best of health.

Martial Arts club  (3 Answers)

I recently moved to Riyadh from Uk, I am looking for any martial arts clubs particularly Tae Kwondo.

Also what about playing football, how easy is it to find a nice pitch to play?
I know grass is probably out of the question, but a good surface will be fine.

Can anyone recommend a good Gym?

Many thanks

Salary advice and lifestyle advice for a friend  (3 Answers)

Dear all,

A friend of mine was looking for some advice on salary packages and lifestyle in Riyadh.

My friend is a banker and has been offered a salary of200,000 plus accomodation (Al-hamra compound) and car. However, they will not be paying for school fees.

He wanted to know if this was a good package for saudi arabia especially given they are not paying school fees and he has 3 kids to worry about?

Is the al-hamra compound a good compound and is it safe?

Can women get jobs in saudi arabia?

thankyou so much  (3 Answers)

Thankyou so much to all who responded. It is disappointing that KSIS's website does not open i have tried so many times. dont know what i am doing wrong. i am still waiting for feedback from the british council and brtish school. I have also looked for a website for manarat ar riyadh and have only come up with sites set up by the students. there was one fairly detailed site but it is in french. I find it hard to believe that there can be no A level programmes out there- i just have not found them yet. The option of year 12 at AIS-r is a good one, however the IG to IB switch may not be possible or practical, as at year 12 there will be a lot of material to cover as the IB is a two year programme just like the A level. However the A level can be compressed. all this along with preparing university applications may prove daunting for a 17 year old. Please let me know if you find out anything else or even if you know of anyone who may be willing to allow me to write them personally. i have hit a wall it seems. nevertheless, Thankyou so much for this insight.

clarification on A level courses  (3 Answers)

Asim k thankyou for your prompt response. I have checked the British school web-site and there was no indication of A level courses. They stop at IGCSE which is year 11. I have also written to them as well as to the british council but have had no response. King Saud international schools website would not open fully and the pakistani school offers gcse and federal board of intermediate. I am really worried as my husband is eager to accept this offer however i will not be able to accompany him as my daughter is already in year 9 and university entry requirements all ask for 12 years of study. That leaves us with the american school which we are trying to avoid due to the high cost. Do you know of anyone with 13-14 year old children who are NOT going to the american school but who ARE planning to do their a levels in riyadh. at this point in time i cannot even determine through the internet if there are any A level courses offerred in riyadh leave alone which schools are offering them.
I am desperately worried as i do not want to split up our family and yet we would prefer to leave the AIS-R as the very last option.
Could you please help??
appreciate any assistance in this regard.

Cant find the answer

Hi everyone,
I know this question has already been asked by one of the other members of VT but for the life of me i cannot find it. could someone please advise if 60k riyals is a good enough rental allowance for a decent three bed apartment/ house in a compound.
I am sorry that i am repeating a question that has already been asked but like i said I cant find it. Also just to clarify we are not looking for too many facilities within except perhaps a pool and a gym, however a multicultural environment would be familiar and more fun. Any suggestions. please advise.

Your Experince wirh european electrical devices 220v/50Hz & Saudi power 110V/220V 60Hz  (1 Answer)

Hi all,
I'm planning to move to Riyad. As I would like to stay for a long period > 10 years, I would like to move all main household stuff to Riyadh, but I'm facing a major problem. Most European big electrical devices are manufactured for 220V 50Hz. and I know in KSA the power is 110V or 220V but 60Hz, which is a big problem for all most all clothes washing machines, dryers, fridges, dishwasher, Microwaves.

But most off the carry on devices should work, because they are designed to such a case, most of them support both frequencies 50Hz/60Hz.

1- What is your experience with washing machines, fridges, dishwasher, microwave ...?
2- how are the prices and quality of such items in KSA (good brands)?

Any feedback and examples are more then welcome!!!
