I'm looking for a daytrip tour of the everglades. We will be staying at 1 Bal Harbor. I will have my parents who are old and cannot walk very much. Any suggestions?
Hello, I have a tour guide/driver whom I recommend on our pages
He is also a neighbor of ours and a heck of a nice guy.
His name is Lenny - tell him that Homer recommended you to him.
He will pick you up, take you to the Everglades, drive you around as well as other places throughout Miami if you wish.
He is GREAT at knowing all the good local food spots and hangouts.
Once you are inside the park (Shark Valley), there is a narrated 1.5 hr tram ride which provides you with all the information you could ever want about the wildlife, formation of the glades, on going projects, etc.
are most of the everglades tours where you ride on a bus or boat? My concern is my parents cannot do much walking and they walk really slow.
Yes, "Everglades" tours (if you want to call them that) do not involve hiking as say, Yellowstone, Grand Teton National Park, Grand Canyon, etc.
If you go to the Flamingo point down south there is a bit of a walk on a very nice partially paved, partially boardwalk trail - but nothing strenuous and in fact you can even use a wheel chair if you so wish.
In the Shark Valley Visitor center area (the one I recommend for more wildlife and nicer tours), there is a huge parking lot and in the parking lot itself a covered waiting area where you purchase your tickets for the tram ride which takes you all around the park - 18 mile loop and takes approximately 1 1/2 hours to complete.
It is fully narrated and explains about the eco system, allows you to get out and climb the observation tower if you wish, talks about the animals, identifies the different variety of birds, mammals and of course alligators you will be guaranteed to see.
The other option is for airboat tours which again will be in the Shark Valley area (off of state road 441/SW 8th street).
You will see 4 or 5 airboat companies. They're all basically the same but each profess to be the 1st and the original.
Choose one (I like the one with the large parking lot and the airboats being displayed right along the side of the road - you cannot miss them).
You jump into the airboat and they take you around the glades showing you the wilderness and wildlife - no need to walk any further than from your car to the actual boat - next to the parking lot area.
Check on www.groupon.com for good discounts and deals. Most recently, they had a 2for1 deal last week or 50% off.
Yes that is indeed a 2nd option. I hardly send anyone up that way as it is more of a zoological park and almost 2 hours away from Miami as it is in Clewiston, Florida - closer to West Palm Beach or even North Ft. Lauderdale.
