I am thinking about vacationing in Germany next November and I was wondering if the 11-11 celebration in Mainz is public? If so what could I expect?
It's public. On Schillerplatz, at 11 minutes past 11, the proclamation of the foolish/crazy (I cannot think of a better word right now) constitution is read, afterwards it's music and dancing in the streets.
But it's only that very day, the real season of carnival will start much later, after Christmas.
Herer you can look at some pictures from this year's 11 November:
On these pictures you can see the mock army very well, originally founded to mock Napoleon's army after they had conquered the Rhine region.
Thanks so much for the information it is just what I needed to know! I would love to go for Carnival but that is a bad time for me to travel.
You're welcome. It's fun, but remember it can be very cold, so if you decide to wear a costume, make it a warm one.
