Madeira Island

Should I hire a car in November?

I am visiting for a week at the end of November, should I hire a car for the week? I can't find any recent advice, many years ago it was suggested that if the weather is wet don't drive! If the buses are frequent and reliable should I rely on them...........?

Welcome to VT

Have visited Madeira many times and always hire a car. Most of the main highways are excellent roads, although you will find that there are a lot of tunnels.Once you get into the countryside and up in the mountains then more care is required. Most of these roads are in better condition than our B roads in the UK.Have used this hire car company before and can highly recommend them [original link].
Have not used the buses in Madeira for getting around the island (apart from in Funchal),but would imagine that you could waste a lot of time waiting around if you only have a week.
Enjoy your stay!

Many thanks [VT member 162e06] - great advice, I do not want to waste time waiting for a bus. Let's hope the weather is kind:)

November can see some rain, but so can any other month. Most likely you won't have a lot of rain though.
Amd Madeira is an island where the infrastructure is made for cars, so renting a car is a good idea.

I work on Madeira Island as a tour guide a few months every year and while rain happens it's not the norm.

On the occasions that I been there at the end of November have only had the occasional shower which does not normally last very long.Shorts and T shirt weather :)
