I need some tips on which Island in Madeira has the best of everything and also the weather in Oct.
Of the Madeira Islands there are only two that are inhabited,Madeira Island and Porto Santo. You will find that Madeira Island has much more to see and do,is much greener with some great scenery.Porto Santo is much quieter, very barren but with some nice beaches.
Have always visited Madeira in October and have always had nice weather, with day temperatures around 23c and minimum at night about 19c.Rainfall usually comes in brief showers.Sea temperature about 22c.
At my profile page you can see a link to my flickr page. I have some fotos of Madeira and Porto Santo. Porto Santo is a very small island, to enjoy it you must be the kind of person that search for quiet. it's a 6.000 population island. You can ride a horse, or a 4x4 motor bike, you can walk, swim at the 8km long bay, you can find a spot at the beach with nobody around screaming at your hear. It's like Mauricias Island, when you choose that kind of destination you already know that relax it's the only activity that you have (of course you can do wind surf or ride on the "inflated banana's boat".
At Madeira Island, you have much more to see, so, although you have the facilities to relax, you don't have time to use them. The island has 250.000 population and 50.000 tourist ,so there is much more confusion, more nightlife, pubs, casino. You have more museums, activities, nature walks, diving, boat travels.
If you have time i recomend that you choose the Main Island, and reserve a day to catch the boat that leaves the island every 7.00am to Porto Santo. It costs about 50euros (including the return). The boat arrives at Porto Santo at 10h00 (10am) and leaves at 20h00 (8pm), so you can stay a entire day at the island.
But if your goal is to read a book during your vacation, with no stress, no schedule, well in that case Porto Santo is your island. The october should be fine, but sometimes may happen to be a rough sea (tides). Some years happens at the end of setember, others at the begining of October.
Anyway, i always spend my vacations at Madeira Island, and i'm a huge fan. :) enjoy it.
