You have chosen a lovely time for your visit to Madeira, and i would recommend that you stay In Funchal. Not only will you get the best weather on the island but you will also be where all the activity is.Christmas lights in Funchal are amazing (think they will be turned on around the 1st December) and the streets are magnificently decorated with colourful lights. There will also be a varied programme of cultural, artistic and folk events.
However, you will find that there is a lot of redevelopment going on along the waterfront, but this should not spoil your enjoyment of this lovely town.I suggest that you book your accommodation as soon as possible as this is a popular time of the year around Funchal.
Weather should be quite pleasant!Have a look at [original link]/madeira

The weather is generally warmer and less windy on the southern side on the island so i would recommend you to stay there, but since 95% of the hotels are located on the south of the island then this should not limit your hotel choice much.

I worked last year in december on the island and will again this year and the weather is normally real pleasant with temperatures in their early 20's.

the temperature can be aroud 20 degrees but it rains a lot in madeira, you have to be lucky.
i prefer to stay in the old city of funchal,is a small and nice.
The hotels resorts are about 2 km further around lido, there is a nice promenade, but there are not sandy beaches.

You have a handfull of hotels in the town center aswell if you prefer that and also in the neighbouring towns if you want a village feel.
