Steam locomotive in Funchal

In about 1980 I was in Funchal. Not far from the port, I came across a huge old steam locomotive, painted and polished, standing on a section of rail in a garden. I have not been able to find a trace of this locomotive since. Did I dream it ? Help. Keith Woods, London.

Was it a relic of this cog railway perhaps?

No. The engine was a full size railway locomotive, perfectly restored, and built (I guess) about 1930 - and built definitely for flat rail lines (not cog railways, or small lines like in coal pits etc.)

It was in an area of small hilly affluent suburban streets, quiet and empty. I remember standing looking at this loco, wondering how the hell it had got there. It was about ten yards from the road, in the grounds of a large building, standing behind high wrought iron railings, and thought of trying to climb over to get a better look - but didn't. This loco cannot have been beamed up - so someone, somewhere, must know something ...

I am emailing every place/ link I can find. Cannot get one solitary trace

But thanx for yr interest. Keith Woods
