Lisbon

address of a public elevator

Hi

Does anyone know what is the address of a public elevator, Or escalator that was planned at the beginning of the 20th century by a disciple of Gustave Eiffel between downtown district (Chiado) and Upper Quarter (Barrio Alto)
not the Santa Justa Lift !

I think the Santa Justa lift is the only elevator designed by a disciple of Eiffel.

Between the two areas you mentioned there is the Santa Caterina tram stop as far as I know.

I think you are probably confusing the general term 'elevadores' and the word 'elevator'.

Most of the Lisbon elevadores are funicular railways, not elevators or escalators.

The one exception is the Santa Justa elevator (a lift, also sometimes called the Carno lift) which opened in 1902. It was designed by Raoul de Mesnier du Ponsard who was, it seems, inspired by Eiffel's Tower (though not a 'disciple' as such).

The others are funicular railways:

Photo 1 Ascensor do Lavra (1884) between Largo da Anunciada and Travessa Forno Torel.

Photo 2 Ascensor da Bica (1892) between Rua Duarte Belo (Rua de Sao Paulo) and Largo de Calhariz

Photo 3 Ascensor da Gloria (1885) between Praca dos Restauradores and Bairro Alto.

There is no other 'elevator' or 'escalator' in the city centre.

You are mostly right, it's the Elevador de Santa Justa. It is located in the Baixa district on Rua Aurea and Rua da Santa Justa. It can be approched either by way of Rua Aurea or via Rua do Carmo ascending towards the fashionable district of Chiado. You can't miss it.

Precious information from Leics (as usual!), I just want to add that, in 2013 a new elevator was opened linking Baixa to Castelo. It's a combination of two elevators, starting in the building from 170 to 178 in Rua dos Fanqueiros, and going up to Rua da Madalena. Nearby, in the old market Chão do Loureiro, (now a Pingo Doce supermarket), another elevator takes you to Costa do Castelo.

It's a little tricky to find, but... it's there, and free.

Thank you. I didn't spot those at all on my last visit. Are both of the elevators/lifts inside shops/supermarkets?
