Any advice on accommodation (mid price Bairro Alto) would be much appreciated.
I never slept in the area, but got good references about Pensão Residencial Camões, a cheap hostel, with rooms with private bathrooms by about 35/40 €.
Pensão Londres worked out well for us. It's a bit more expensive than the recommendation above.

Grapes and Bites hostel was great, its location was perfect if you want to go out and party with the craziest partiers on earth. The subway station was a 5 minute walk at most. The private room with shared bathroom was about $60 a night. The girls running the place were awesome.
Bairro Alto is better as a place to visit than a place to stay. It is quite far from the main attractions and only good for nightlife. Stay in Chiado and make a few excursions there instead.
Excuse me maz100; but isn't Chiado quite near Barrio Alto? Am I wrong?
You are right, Maurizio, Bairro Alto is adjacent to Chiado, but maz100 is not totally wrong - Bairro Alto is a very steep quarter, with narrow streets and bad public transports inside it. You have Metro in Chiado, close to the lower end, but walking from there to some areas in Bairro Alto may be far and tiring. Furthermore, there's not much to see in Bairro Alto during the day, so, staying in another area better served by transports, and less demanding physically would not be a bad idea.
