Hello, we will be travelling from Milan to Cinque Terre by train arriving Monterosso Station around end of May. Since most of the hotels in Monterosso al Mare (we prefer) are fully booked therefore would like to consider other location (which is not too far from Monterosso Station). Is Levento the best choice in terms of distance ? How much it will cost to take a taxi ? Any other means of transportation to get there ? If Levento is not the closest alternative any other suggestions ? Thanks for your advise in advance.
Even La Spezia is OK for accommodation, (train from Milan ends in La Spezia), and from there you have very frequent local trains to Cinque Terre.
The five villages of the Cinque Terre are not very far apart at all: only 7 miles from the northernmost (Monterosso) to the southernmost (Riomaggiore) so an accommodation in any of them would be fine. You need to take a little bus from the train station up to Corniglia so maybe that one would be a last choice if you have a lot of luggage.
La Spezia or Levanto are your next best choices (also not really very far away) and can be reached by train - which are frequent and for which tickets will be very inexpensive. Reference the Trenitalia website for schedules:
You can also usually pick up a train schedule at the stations within the CT or print one from the web. Here's what the current schedule looks like (click on the PDF link):
This schedule will most likely change mid June as more trains are added for high season.
