I have booked a cheap return flight from Italy to Riga in October.
I would like to split my 8 days / 9 nights between Estonia (maybe Finland) and Latvia, but I'm not sure if I'd better stay 5 nights in Tallinn and 4 in Riga or the other way around.
I'm interested in visiting cities, towns, churches, castles, museums... I will be moving around by train/bus, so I will only go to places that are easy to reach without a car.
In Estonia, I want to visit Tallinn, Tartu, maybe Narva and Helsinki (all day-trips from Tallinn, Helsinki being a bit more unlikely). Should I add/remove anything?
In Latvia, I plan on visiting Riga, then take one or two day-trips to Cesis and Sigulda. What else?
Any advice on how to split my days in the Baltics and what to visit is welcome.
We with 3 small children plan to visit Latvia for 5 days in August. Generally we will stay in Riga. But I think to spend two days+night in Ventspils (ot Tukums?...).
Is there direct bus or train to Ventspils and Tukums? Better if it would be faster transportation without many stops. Which is better to visit? Ventspils has a beach....
I'm thinking of visiting Latvia for 7-10 days in August, by myself (40 y/o woman), by public transportation.
Except Riga, what would you recommend adding to the list?
I'm interested in culture and nature, not a big fan of crowded places, and prefer cooler places, without mosquitoes, if possible... ;)
Well; as the New Year is here, I've decided to try something new and visit a country not many are familiar with. Aster some thinking I've decided upon Latvia, one of the three Baltic states (that's literally what every article about Latvia says first, that it is a member of Baltic States :D ). The problem is, I don't know much about it either. The guide on VirtualTourist (and LOTS of other guides out there) mainly mentions different historical sites/archtecture, which is interesting of course, but I'm more curious about if Latvia offers any active sports/adventure type of entertainment. I've tried searching local (meaning Lavian) sites, but the only thing I found (praise Google Translate! :D :D) is this which names kiteboarding, surfing and sailing. A good start, but does anyone have any other knowledge on this subject? Or maybe I missed something in the VirtualTourist guides?
Hi fellow VirtualTourist,
We would like to ask for your help in planning our trip to both Latvia and Lithuania. We would like to create some itinerary with your input so that we can visit and see those things that you feel best represents the country. We posted something earlier but now have a more definite idea of dates.
We have about 10 usable days between July 4 and July 15 to explore both places. If you feel that it is not enough time for both pls. say so. Our first choice then would be Latvia. My wife’s family hails from Riga.
We would leave from Lausanne/Geneva, Switzerland on July 3. We have to be in Warsaw, Poland on July 15.
In addition to in location itineraries we would appreciate your opinions on the best way to get from Lausanne/Geneva to Riga (assumed start point in Latvia). Best by train, bus or air. If by air which airline, if bus which bus company. Also, best way to get to Warsaw.
We would also welcome thoughts on accommodations possibly for use as our base and accessible to transportation.
We are both curious of people, place and culture. My wife (58yo) is a 5th grade science teacher and I am somewhat retired (66yo) and “always exploring” interesting things. We are in good health and 2 summers ago spent fabulous 6 weeks exploring Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Serbia, Hungary, and southern Poland.
Pls. don’t hesitate to ask any questions you might have to help you help us.
Thank you for your time in reading this request as well as for your time in providing a thoughtful response.

Can you recomend cheap but more or less good hotel/guesthouse for family (parents + two 2-4 year olds chilren) in the centre or close in Riga?
We would like to visit some small town near Riga (+stay overnight) by bus or train. Maybe Bauska? Sigulda?... other options?
This weekend we (wife+ 2 children 2-4 y.old) plan to spend in Lavia - 3 days. I think to visit some town not far from Riga for day + night and next day return to Riga. Bauska? Sigulda?....
It must have good bus/train connection with Riga, max. 1 hour travel.
It mustn't be TOP tourist attraction, just simple town with some interesting/historical sight, local cuisine restaurant, etc. Which town would you recomend? Not expensive/cheap accomodation there? How to get there from Riga bus/train station?
Does the recipient of a gift from canada have to pay taxes on it when they receive it in Latvia? Is there any way around this? Thank you
Next month we will travel to Latvia, driving from Estonia. Which is the best place to change currency? Are credit cards generally accepted? I mean, in hotels, restaurants, petrol stations… not for small expenses. In case we miscalculate our expenses and stay out of lati, are euros accepted?
Thanks in advance.

We are travelling to Europe later this year and want to try and find some relatives which I have never meet. My father was born there and want to find out about my heriatge etc. I have some addresses written in Latvian which I can not translate.
Is there anyone who might be able to help me out.
Hi, I'm considering a trip to Lithuania/Latvia/Estonia for later this year. I was wondering how easy/difficult it is to get from one country to the next via ground transportation (either buses or trains).
Basically, are there up to date and easy to find schedules? Does everything run on time?
My father was Latvian and passed away a little time ago. I have found a couple of letters from his niece in Riga, but can not understand the addresses on them. I would greatly appreciative of anyone who could help me in this translation. I can scan the addresses and email to anyone who may be able to help.
Many Thanks Gunar

Thinking about trip to Latvia. Want to visit Lizums village, Valmiera town, maybe Gulbene etc.
What sights should we visit in Valmiera, Smiltene, Gulbene? (museums, old churches, palaces...) Any other interesting places in this region? Strenci?
I'm interested in traveling to Estonia and Latvia in the fall, late September or early October. I think about visiting Tallinn and Tartu in Estonia. In Latvia, I'd like to visit cities nearby Gauja Valley, such as Cesis and Sigulda, and the capital, Riga. It seems that there is a good public transportation system connecting the above cities. Are the buses and trains connecting the above cities all year around? I also wonder if it is feasible to visit all the above places in 10 to 12 days traveling by the buses and trains.
In june we will be in Latvia. We want to travel from Melluzi, Jurmala to Ventspils. I found a bus, number 7948 that leaves Melluzi at 11.48 hours and arrives in Ventspils at 15.40 hrs. Is this the best option??
We are planning a driving trip through Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia in late August/early September. Are the roads well sign-posted? What are the road conditions in general? Can one get through the country speaking English and some German? Are ATMs widespread and easy to find? How developed are touristic facilities?
we intend to rent a car to travel from latvia to estonia and back, is there a surcharge for crossing the border?I couldn't find the answer to this question anywhere..thanks!
Will be in Riga-Jurmala area, for 3 weeks.
I will have phone which is "sim free" and works fine in Poland.
Looking for advice on buying pre-paid SIM card and loading it with credit.
Is it possible? Any compatibility issues? Where to buy?
Cost of such card and price per minute for local calls?
Me and a friend will be in Riga 4 days end of July. Next to seeing the capital, we'd also like to enjoy some activities outside the city. I've read that Jurmala is apparently quite popular to spend hot summer days at the beach. Are there other opportunities near? For example bike renting for a trip through some nice nature?
my flight is cancelled due to the volcano situation. Would you know what other means do I have to get back to Sofia as quickly as possible?
If there is no way to get to Sofia, then to Bucharest or Vienna, I can manage from there.
Can foreigners have bank account in Latvia? I want an account to transfer money to/from my home country. If possible, what do you need to get it?
Can you also suggest a good bank?
If I buy a ticket online from the Air Baltic website, will it be an e-ticket or a paper ticket ? (I need an e-ticket, since I will be travelling when I buy it, and won't be at home to receive a paper ticket).
I will be in Latvia soon, but i would like to know cheap accomodations, anybody can help me??
This is a pre-paid SIM card. I believe that the credit is only valid for 3 months.
Is there any way to prolong the time for which the credit is valid?
If I buy a top-up card, can I save it for later use?
